I'm asking for a friend who is looking to move house to somewhere she and her husband can bring up their scrumptious (and may I say impeccably behaved in Pizza Express) son! If you could say what sort of house you have and what you had done I (and I'm sure she) would very grateful Thanks lovely mnetters!

I have a Victorian semi, whose roof slopes down towards the front window as opposed to next door (IYSWIM) We had an L shaped Dorma loft conversion, adding a lovely bathroom on the loft level, and another bathroom on the next foor down. ALL IN it came to about 50k I reckon. We had new boiler and Megaflow too.

Here's an interesting fact, if your friend or friend's DH is VAT registered and works from home, and assuming the new loft is going to be used as home office space in some way as many are, then the VAT portion of the loft bill can be reclaimed.

Its true, the VAT inspector told me.

Don't try and get it back off normal tax though, thats an entirely different kettle of fish.

Sorry, still haven't quite got over the shock of HMCE actually giving ME money, so had to share.

About £20,000 in Victorian semi, small bathroom, one bedroom.

How long is a piece of string....

Depends on what she wants done and how it can be fitted in...

We had an loft conversion done in Surrey - bedroom, en-suite bathroom (with shower - no bath) and dressing room for £45K
