pls help - aga installation advice needed before tomorrow ......

Help, having accidentally turned the "small structural changes" in my new house into a massive renovation project including possibly switching room functions around, I am now left with a dilemma which only you Aga owners can help me with.

Do I have to have a solid floor to install an Aga? I want to site my range cooker (future Aga when money permits) on a joisted floor. Is this possible for an Aga?

If not, I either have to move my kitchen to another room in the house or forget the Aga dream.

PS does anyone regret having an Aga?

don't know but when we built our house we had the floor (solid anyway, not joisted) specially braced for an aga in case someone else wanted to put one in, on the builder's advice. If you do ever get one go the whole hog and get the 4-door version but also get a nice fast gas hob (my sister's advice, long-term aga owner)

Ours is on a solid floor too and was already here when we moved in.

The best course of action is probably to phone Aga in the morning - this is their Home Survey number, they usually send somebody round to talk floors/chimneys/air space etc which you may also need to consider but hopefully they can answer the floor question over the phone. Tel 08457 125207.

We didn't fit ours - was here when we bought house, but I was under the impression that they had to stand on a big platform of concrete.

Def. don't regret having it - it makes the kitchen really cosy, and we cook 'properly' more often because the oven is always hot. The woman we bought our house from said that there were 3 things that she would miss about the house and that the Aga was number 1.

I would very much doubt that joists would be enough.

You need a concrete base under the aga itself- we have joisted floors throughout so we lifted them where the aga was to be positioned and poured concrete there only. A survey will tell you exactly what you need.

I have a four oven gas Aga. We have oak floors (on joists) in our kitchen and we bought one of their special Aga plinths (it's made of metal) for the Aga to sit on. In my last house we changed the position of the Aga and we had a poured concrete base which the tiler then tiled - Aga gave us all the necessary dimensions and instructions.

A friend of mine has a first floor kitchen and she has an Aga - so nothing is impossible.

Their customer service is second to none.

In my experience people who really love to cook like them whereas people who just like the idea/look of an Aga don't really get on with them so well.

Thanks everyone. Duchess I will ring Aga Home Survey team tomorrow. Tonight I will carry on moving my kitchen to another room and ask the builders to lift part of the floor and make a concrete base underneath where the range/future aga will sit

At the bottom of the joists is an old quarry tile solid floor so it should be simple to box out an area and concrete (but then I'm not a builder!

obviously I'm only moving it/planning it on paper this evening .... the house has no heating, plumbing or electricity at the moment so I'm certainly not physically going there this evening!

My Aga is on a plinth, floor slightly lower than Aga.
I would second advice on extra gas hob. I have a 2 oven, but would go for reconditioned 4 oven, plus gas hob if/when we move and don't win the lottery.
What colour are all our agas? I do think we need to find the most popular MN aga colour!

We have a 2 oven which is a forerunner of British Racing Green (it's at least 50 years old - solid fuel too) .

It's in perfect working order but I suspect that when our 4 DCs are older I will need more cooking space.

Four oven. Absolutely love it. We have a back up electric hob and oven so we can turn it off in the summer.

Colour is Jade which I believe was discontinued some time ago. Almost like British Racing Green but with a bluer tint.

How do you find a reconditioned aga? Woudl love one for our new house but am sure DH will refuse on grounds of cost!

our (dark blue) 2 oven Rayburn isn't on a solid floor, but is on top of joists, marine ply and slate tiles.....Aga/ Rayburn Man said it was fine!
