I think one of our neighbours has had an air source heat pump installed - we can hear a noise like a fan/blower running constantly, and every so often it gets a lot louder - fan running faster/'hotter'.
Is this what a heat pump sounds like? I've looked over fences but can't tell which house it is - it seems terribly loud, and I think will disturb people sleeping with windows open in summer.
