Vague possibility of job move. Anyone from Cardiff or Leicester?

Can anyone from Cardiff or Leicester advise on what the not-so-nice areas to avoid are or suggest some nice areas.

There is a vague possibility of a job move to one of these locations. Would be city centre Leicester or LLanishen Cardiff.

Need travel within an hour home to office and have a 1 year old that would need a nursery and ultimately a decent primary school.

(and a bonus would be a Morrisons not too far away)

Thanks

Cardiff is LOVELY!

Moved here 2 1/2 years ago when pg with DD, and we love it.

Wherever you lived in Cardiff, you would be under 30 mins from Llanishen.

Nice area on that side of the city are Roath/Penylan/Cyncoed. All near Roath Park, which is fab, with big boating lake, playground, playing fields etc.

Other area that are nice for family life are Whitchurch/Llandaff/Radyr/Pontcanna.

Avoid: Splott, Grangetown, Llanederyn, Ely, Rumney, Llanrumney

Is you wnat some advice on estate agents to look at, let me know as am property junkie and spend hours looking online at houses I will never buy.

I'm not really clued up on schools, as our local one is dire and we have got DD down for private. There are lots of nurseries around though-I've been to see dozens, so if you get to that stage, let me know and I'll tell you my thoughts.

Fab thing about living here is that you are 30 mins drive from proper countryside, and 40 mins from lovely beaches, but only 2 hrs by train from London, and straight onto motorway to get anywhere.
The airport here is good too, only 30mins from centre and flights to most places.

AND there is a MASSIVE Morrisons in LLanishen!

Oh thanks for that! That is very reassuring. If we get any further with the planning I will come back to you for more info. When all you've got is just house details it's difficult to suss it out.

I live in Leicestershire, but would NEVER consider living in Leicester city centre.I've not been to Cardiff, but it must be better than Leicester is.

I live in Cardiff. The city is nice, lots to do whatever your tastes, but I make no secret of my dislike of some of the people I have met here and their unnatural hatred of the english

I live in Thornhill, which is lovely, we have a great country park and a sainsburys, good access to motorway and good bus and train service into city centre. Its right next to Llanishen which has an M&S food, laura ashley, boots and starbucks on an retail park thing (sounds awful but in reality very nice). Llanishen has some good primary schools namely Coed Glas and Heol Llanishen Fach (where ds's godfather teaches Yr1) or 2 catholic primaries to choose from Christ the King or St. Josephs.
Cyncoed, Lisvane, Whitchurch, Rwibina and areas of Heath also very nice.

DH works in Leicester but we don't live anywhere near. However we did think about moving once and everyone said Oadby was nice if you wanted to live that close to Leiester. Schools are meant to be v.good there.

For places further away Oakham is very nice. Think it would be within an hour's travel.

Right we lived in Leicester Stoneygate, Oadby, Great Glen and some of the villages are lovely. Now live in cardiff by Roath Park agree with what everyone else has said.
Schools around roath park are brilliant

dirtygertiefromnumber30 · 09/04/2008 21:15

youve sooooo got to come to cardiff!

Other cardiffians have given good advice. There are good schools in Lisvane (borders llanishen but v pricey), Rhydepenau, Lakeside, Roath Park and Penylan (all very close to llanishen)

As well as a HUGE morrisons, llanishen village has a couple of pubs, postoffice, some decent shops.

You would be near lovely parks, great countryside and beaches and cardiff city centre is undergoing huge regeneration which is going to make it the 5th largest shopping centre in the UK.

No brainer!!

I live in Leicester - Knighton (top choice) or Stoneygate are good if you want to live in the city in family friendly areas. Clarendon Park used to be quite popular and has a good if small shopping road with cafes, bars, small shops and a library - not too far from either area above. Stoneygate has nice but more upmarket and not so child friendly shopping area too. Various villages around that are good too - depends what you want. There is a Morrisons on the south of the city, or Asda, Sainsburys in Oadby just down the road a bit further out.

Leicester is also getting a bit better - big new shopping centre incl John Lewis due to open in autumn and a new Performing Arts Centre.

HTH.
