Loo seat/plug help! How to find what fits???

So, DH has always been in charge of these things in our house, but he is unbelievably terrible at them, and the result is that loads of things just don't work.

For example: three loo seats in a row have broken. This is because they don't fit the bowl of the loo properly, so they get strained, and then they wobble, and then they get sat on at a bad angle and then they break either at the hinges or (this one) across the seat itself so it can pinch you HORRIBLY when you sit down.

How can I 'size' the loo bowl, so that I can buy a seat that actually fits? I can't see a maker's name (where would I look?)

And another thing: the pop up plugs on basin and bath have both gone (this is another nightmare as it means you have to dig around w fingers to get the plug up). How do I find out what will fit?

DH would live with these problems for EVER and I'd like to sort them out...

Measure the distance between the two holes for the hinges on your toilet bowl - most toilet seats will have a small leeway of adjustability. Then measure the length/depth from the hinge hole to the end of the bowl so you can find the closest in size. I've never had an issue with the width but really hate when the seat is shorter than the bowl!

Never thought I'd be talking about the toilet on a forum but here's a pic of what I mean.

We were advised to make a card version of our loo seat marked with where the fittings would go and take it to the shop. Felt like idiots but it worked!

You are both amazing: thank you! I don’t have a shop to go to (where sells loo seats??) but mYbe this is now my next quest!
I think we may have a width issue - not sure which bit doesn’t fit as once it’s broken nothing fits - but this is v v helpful. Thank you!
also never thought this would be a question I would ask…
