How much did you pay for your driveway gates?

If you don't mind sharing, I'm curious to know how much other people have paid for their driveway gates.

I just received a quote for a standard-ish design pair of gates (picture attached) at 1.2m height and 3.5m across in size.

If we get just the gate installed it's £3200
If we get the gates automated so they swing inwards it's £4500..
If we were to get a sliding across gate it would be £7200.

I had googled costs for a rough idea before getting quotes and was hoping to spend about £1200 on a non-automated gate. Does this sound realistic? Feeling quite sad as I was really hoping that we could get it sorted as at the moment our driveway has nothing there .

We're based in London but very much on the peripheries in a location that could even be described as a bit deprived.

PS. The design we want is less frilly than the attached image. I just grabbed the image from Google.

We are just about to buy a house with gates and dh is going to automate them . The kit is £400 .

HappiestSleeping · 11/03/2024 07:01

I looked into getting gates but found it cost prohibitive. I also intend to go down the route of installing automation myself, although one has to be careful to get a kit that matches the weight of the gates and the correct type of locking mechanism.

@wowihaveagardennow although the price you've been quoted sounds high, it probably isn't far off. Are the gates made by the company that quoted you? I would imagine they are in order to fit properly, and if so, that isn't a bad quote.

Twiglets1 · 11/03/2024 07:27

Almost 10k but that also includes an intercom and yes the gates were custom fitted. Too much probably but we were struggling even to get a company to quote in the south east.

TizerorFizz · 11/03/2024 07:59

That’s about right. Those are metal gates and you can get some wooden gates cheaper. A field gate would be!

Thisbastardcomputer · 11/03/2024 08:30

Sliding gates last much longer than the traditional two opening gates, the rams fail.

wowihaveagardennow · 11/03/2024 08:50

Oh gosh, I was secretly hoping all the posts to say how we can definitely get cheaper and that we've been quoted too much 😂😭 in that case it's too much for us to justify as we had to spend quite a.bit already on this house before we could even move in

Second hand ones from Marketplace?

TizerorFizz · 11/03/2024 12:44

Our metal gates are fine. Hand forged locally. No failure likely after many years!

housethatbuiltme · 11/03/2024 13:21

I haven't bought any yet but was shocked looking at prices.

We literally just want new gates because the house we are buying ones are rotted and collapsed, nothing fancy or auto but the cheapest we can find is hundreds.

Deathbyfluffy · 11/03/2024 13:23

Gates are expensive, especially if custom-made - the process to manufacture them to a custom size is very time consuming.
£1200 is nowhere near realistic I'm afraid - perhaps look at wooden gates instead if cost is an issue.

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 11/03/2024 13:41

We had a quote last year for metal gates (not automated) with fitting. Over £6k. Needless to say we didn't buy them.
I'm in Yorkshire.
Other people I've tried to get quotes from say they want to come and measure and then don't turn up.

The last set of gates I bought for my previous house around 12yrs ago cost £600 so I was pretty shocked at the new quote for £6k.

TizerorFizz · 11/03/2024 16:21

Quotes also depend on whether you need new gateposts or not. On electricity supply and whether you are ok with wood gate posts and gate. Meteal gates need substantial gateposts.

@wowihaveagardennow , I live in west London, a short distance from Chiswick, and there is a highly recommended gate manufacturer near me if you are interested in getting a second quote.

Hello @cheekaa
Yes please! We are about 20min west of Chiswick so that would be fantastic 😊

I live SE UK, 2hrs from London now. Its not gates at the very front along the road, but either side of the house. 4m one side and 3m the other, and 2m high. Not electric.
The metal surrounds are powder coated and we chose cedar infill rather than the cheaper pine (I think it was pine?). Ours are £6,200.

Malbab · 11/03/2024 20:46

we had three quotes last year- total 5 metre in width swing gates, with automation was around 11K inc VAT, wrought iron and galvanised powder coated- one quite was around 14K, we haven't done it due to the high costs, but would like to at some point...we are in reading, the companies were based in wokingham, oxford and hampshire...

cheekaa · 12/03/2024 17:20

@wowihaveagardennow , They are P & R Fabrrications
Isleworth
Just Google them. I hope they are not the ones you are talking to already!!

Bobalotabob · 12/03/2024 17:26

We paid around £6000 for ours in 2018. Automatic, galvanized metal posts with wooden gates. They were custom made.

I have only bought railings from them and not gates.

Definitelylivedin · 13/03/2024 07:09

About 5k custom made but not automated (that was another 2k)

However, we have had cheap gates before which we fitted ourselves and had nothing but problems with them and after 5 years they looked rubbish (2 different sets at different houses). These ones look as good as they did 3 years ago and open and close with fingertip pressure. Worth every penny.

Diamondglintsonsnow · 13/03/2024 07:10

£10k for sliding gates

They are wonderful, especially Dean.

Though sadly they got beaten on a quote by Securifix in Richmond.

I've used Securifix 3 times now for gates as they do powder coated black and not black plate.

harwelldesign · 25/09/2024 07:45

I paid around $1,500 for my driveway gates, including installation. Prices can vary based on material, size, and design, so it's best to shop around for quotes.

A bit late to this conversation but I don't get these prices. Ebay search shows 3m wooden gates from 1k. Just looked at aluminium ones 1.5k. With pillars 2k. DIY Automation kit 200-400.

Kokina · 16/01/2025 20:58

@harwelldesign this is a US company I think the op is UK
