Hemnes day bed or real bed?!

ohsobroody · 02/02/2024 08:04

We are re decorating our guest bedroom. I'm stuck deciding between the hemnes day bed from ikea or a standard double bed!!

Day bed pros

Real mattresses (but maybe a gap in the middle when made as a double?)
We can use the spare room as a snug as well as a guest room
Folds away
Storage drawers

Real bed pros

Probably comfier?

We have family stay several times a month
The room is a spare and we won't be having more children

Advice would be great especially from either people who have the hemnes daybed or those who are women in their mid 50s and stay with their kids and wouldn't mind a day bed lol

If you are having frequent guests then get a proper bed. They are always much more comfortable and you won't have the faff of rearranging everything all the time. If it was just an occasional guest then I would say get the day bed.

I have a day bed and it’s really comfortable. It’s not much of a faff as you can stack the mattresses with sheets etc and the drawers fit the duvet and pillows. I sleep on it 1-2 times a week with no problems.

Traumdeuter · 02/02/2024 08:16

Should say it’s the Brimnes (?) from ikea which I think uses the same mattresses as Hemnes

isthewashingdryyet · 02/02/2024 08:18

The day bed is a proper double bed when pulled out, no gap.

We have just got one and sold the double bed and now use the rest of the room much more easily as there is loads of space.

We’ve got a Hemnes day bed. It’s really useful and leaves more space in the spare room when tucked away. You can buy it with various mattresses - go for the top end ones. The cheap ones are too thin.

Longcovider · 02/02/2024 08:21

Hemnes is fine to sleep on imo, but agree, get slightly better mattresses

Pushkinini · 02/02/2024 08:23

We have a Hemnes day bed in the spare room-cum-office. DD and her BF sleep on it 2 or 3 times ahead for a week or so at a time and they say it's comfy, although I have put a mattress topper on too.

It's great as all the bedding can be shoved in the drawers underneath and when it's not in use I just cover it up with a throw and cushions so it looks like a sofa. The single mattresses are 80 x 200 cm which are smaller than a normal single. I use super king bedding when I make it up for two.

Such quick and helpful responses I love you Mumsnet. Good tip about getting the very best mattresses for day bed.

Planning a nice thick mattress topper as well either way!

This is brilliant thanks

Apparently it is the most complicated thing from ikea to build!
we got one for my dc and I must admit it’s never been used as a double bed as I am not convinced I could fold it back!
says more about my DIY skills though.

MindHowYouGoes · 02/02/2024 08:33

I had one and loved it. As long as you get the decent mattresses it’ll be fine for guests to use

Oh god, hopefully worth it in long run though I'm hearing lots of positives and I do like the idea of having it as a tv room/snug as kids get older

My best friend has a Hemnes day bed and the beat mattress that goes with it and I stay with her frequently and have just turned 50! It's absolutely fine and I get a good night's sleep in it so definitely recommend. Takes up a lot less space in her spare room and looks good too!

idontlikealdi · 02/02/2024 08:53

We had the hemnes with decent mattresses and it was great (only got rid as changed the spare room into a playroom). Slight annoyance is that you have to climb over the other person to get out because of the foot panel.

ohsobroody · 02/02/2024 10:34

@idontlikealdi our guests are almost all single so this should work out well. Definitely leaning towards the hemnes thanks all!

We have the hemnes day bed which is now dd's main bed.

Before we had dd, it was our guest bed in our old flat. Everyone used to say how comfortable it was. Mil in particular always raved about what a good night sleep she'd had (in spite of London traffic noise!)

Get the hemnes

User2292994 · 02/02/2024 10:40

Sorry to be the miserable one. Ds had one in his bedroom. It was quite tricky to pull in and out. I suspect it would be better on hard floor, we had a carpet. And the more we moved it around the more wobbly it became. So if you're converting it a couple of times a week it might not last very long. Maybe we didn't build it properly though. Ds slept happily on it as a single for years and we pulles it out for guests. The big drawers were great.

PrawnDumplings · 02/02/2024 12:24

Which are the best mattresses?

lightelmqueen · 02/02/2024 12:27

We had the hemnes day bed as our sofa in the family room. It is very comfortable to sleep on when pulled out as a full bed (we only had the cheapest mattresses as well). The drawers are massive and can store so much in them

WatchOutLurkerAbout · 13/04/2024 22:27

Can anyone recommend mattresses or toppers for the hemnes? We would like to get one but not sure what to be looking out for

We did go with hemnes in the end and bought a slightly more pricy memory foam topper. Both DH and I have slept in it and it's fab, guests have complimented us too
