Has anyone painted over an IKEA laminate desk?

We've been given an IKEA lift bed which has a built in desk. All great condition except that the desk has been scribbled on with permanent marker. I've tried everything I can think of to clean it off, but nothing has shifted it in the slightest! I was wondering whether I could paint over it - would that work or would it just peel off? The surface is that sort of glossy laminate stuff, so it doesn't feel like it would hold paint well.

If not, any other ideas? It's not the end of the world if we just have to leave it, but I'd like to get it looking cleaner if I can!

Can you get a glass shop to cut and bevel edge a piece of glass to go over the desk, then use it to display artwork/pictures underneath?
My friend had a desk like this when we were teenagers. She regularly changed what was underneath depending on which pop star she loved that week (and could cut out of Jackie magazine).

Perspex would be better than glass

My alternative suggestion is to decoupage the surface, you could choose some wrapping paper that you really like, or use newspaper clippings. The possibilities are endless! I used this technique to personalise a desktop for my son using Tintin cartoon strips.
Have a Google to find out more.

Dry wipe pen over the top of it or alco gel hand sanitiser
