Are they troublesome?

In the process of buying an old house that has one, know my aunt and uncle had one without too much trouble but any other experiences?

You should have it included in the survey if poss, to make sure that it is not in imminent danger of leaking/bursting. If it is quite an old house especially.

You need to have it emptied regularly, but the current owners could advise you on that one.

No other problems as far as I know.

Hi we have a septic tank and have no probs at all, and saves money on your water rates as do not have to pay for main drainage.

we live in a 1920s house and it wasn't until 2 years ago that the original pipework needed replacing. was expessive at £1500 but considering how long it had been there and no sewage charges on your water bills not too bad. We have no problems whatsoever. Baths , showers, dishwasher and washing machine always on. We were advised to go easy on household cleaners and bleach etc. Most products have suitability for septic tanks stated on the labels.
