Aircon as an alternative to storage heater

I hate my storage heaters with a passion.

Anyone change theirs and replaced with aircon?
To me it sounds great, heat in winter and cool in summer.
I have a balcony I could put the outside bit on.
I know the initial outlay is quite high but would they be cheaper to run?
is this a crazy idea?

I seem to remember somewhere you can get heat pumps that will function as coolers in summer and heaters in winter. The approx. 3x decrease in energy usage would help.

But ... I don't think they are eligible for government grants because the cooling function is seen as environmentally unfriendly.

I believe some also require planning permission?

But a heat pump for heating is a good idea.
