Sink/hob/nothing on island

Trying to design my new kitchen and interested in experience of having sink/hob on the island. I had hoped to have it free from appliances but to do that would mean sink/hob along the same worktop which I think could be a bit awkward. So which appliance would you recommend having on your island?

We bought a house with a sink in the island and I passionately hate it. The first thing you see, and the centre of the kitchen, is just dirty plates or drying plates or (thanks, DH) recycling piled next to the sink for some reason. I am counting the hours - many, many of them - till we can afford to do the kitchen and get rid of the fucking thing.
