Flooring - has anyone done /had plywood as flooring?

I mean plywood only, then sanded and varnished (or painted) as opposed to floorboards.

Haven't had it mysmelf, but my sister went to a very smart house who had it varnished, and absolutely raved about how fantasitc it looked.

It can look good but needs to be top quality and done well.

We did in our first flat!! Wanted wooden flooring in the hallway but couldn't afford it - then dh said what about plywood? We got a sheet, put it down and stained it - looked pretty good (certainly didn't put off the couple that bought it). Not sure how joins would have worked over a bigger space but I'm sure dh would have managed!
