My mum does - she just went over and bought it. She's actually on her second one, bought one, did it up then sold it to raise some cash when her business went bust. She reckons French Property News is the best place to look/sell, unless you just go out there and use normal estate agents in teh area (as she did).

We found our place via a friend but if you like the idea, then you first need to choose the area, visit it, then decide what type of place you are looking for (town/rural/old/new). Only then can you narrow down your search. There are a couple of very good books on areas to live and the practicalities of buying - I will try to remember to dig them out tonight and let you know the titles..

Ooh thanks all for the replies. The book titles would be very helpful Squiffy - thank you.

We are considering the Pas de Calais region/around Lille, although not really that fussed.

The best book is called 'More France please, we're British' by Helena Frith Powell. Loads of practical advice and written with a sense of humour.
