Moving to Newark Nottinghamshire?!

Were planning on moving to Newark Nottinghamshire and have found somewhere we like but it transpires it's in "Hawtonville" which is apparently (so the Facebook groups and a quick Google says) a deprived area with lots of drug issues and crime!

Is anyone local and have any insight into what it's really like? The houses are on Windsor Avenue and Boundary Road which I've been told is right at the top so not too bad but there's basically dodgy roads just a few roads away.

Were moving from a very different part of the UK and doing so to try and give our young ones a better future with more space, so is moving to somewhere considered so bad just not worth it?

I'm struggling with knowing what to do, were moving partly because where we are has bad drug use and anti social behaviour so don't really want to go out of the pan and into the fire.

And help, advice or information is hugely appreciated 🙏

Google ADT crime tool and enter your future postcode.

I have found it invaluable in the past.

I love Newark, I used to have my caravan sited there. Is there any way you could look at surrounding areas? North & South Muskham & Caunton are lovely, only 5 minutes drive from the centre & convenient for the A1.

Oooh, I live in Newark (clue is in the name) and love it. Like you, we moved here to give ourselves more space, a nicer house and slower pace of life. Just better quality of life all round really - and we are very happy here. It's the best move we could have made and we have no plans to move away any time soon.

The roads you've mentioned would be fine and they are really close to Sconce Park (I was there today with my kids, in fact - it's a brilliant park with lots of little nature walks and a great kids playground and cafe). You're handy for town too. But it's true that the area is fairly close to a less desirable part of Newark. Have you looked at the school situation for the roads you're considering? The nearest primary school to there has now moved to the new development, Middlebeck. There is a Catholic primary on Boundary Road though.

Happy to answer any questions you may have anyway! It's great here, honest! People are very friendly and we really feel part of the community here now with lots of friends. The market square was lovely in the sunshine today - the council is doing a lot to bring people into town and there are lots of independent shops and a creative scene. There's a food and drink festival on this weekend and it was really buzzing and full of people in town. There is lots to do here and get involved with!

I live between Lincoln and Newark but work in community care in Newark. Personally if moving to Newark I would choose to live in one of the slightly outlying larger villages/areas like fernwood or if you needed to be a bit closer to town perhaps the new Middlebeck estate not far from Hawtonville. I find like most town centres the houses and people in the town centre are quite varied and the more desirable areas are only a couple of streets away from the less. There are some very charming old terraces and streets in the town centre. Overall Newark and the people seem nice enough, a small town but probably has the most fantastic transport links in the country. I prefer where I live just outside Newark but is nice to live close by. Good luck with the move

Winthorpe road and the people who live there seem nice enough, can’t imagine had much of a village feel though as is a long main..ish straight road. I’d of thought one of the clusters of roads just off it would be nicer

I cycle down winthorpe rd quite a bit. I mean I’m not scared for my life or anything but I have had teens follow me harassing me about wanting to “buy” my bike. There does seem to be an element of teens hanging around looking bored but they’re probably harmless. It looks a bit of a deprived area but might be lovely to live there.
