Fence paint for front door

This seems to be a question I should know the answer to by simple lived experience, but can you use fence paint for a front door? We've painted the fence and the shed, and our front door (wooden) could do with some attention. It's matt paint, which from my recent perusal of front doors seems not the done thing, but hard to tell if that's just because so many front doors locally are UVPC rather than painted.

I wouldn’t think this was a good idea, fence paint is water based which won’t stick properly to either metal, artificial surfaces like composite doors or doors previously painted with exterior paint which is oil based.

If the door is wood or metal, you could get an exterior paint matched to the colour. Composite has to be painted with specialist paint, which has a limited range of colours.

Sorry, I’ve just seen it is wood, so go with the proper exterior paint ( unless you only want it to last for a year or two. The surfaces are just different)

Oil based paint for an exterior wooden door is strongly recommended because it is more resistant and durable than water based.
A good-quality wooden front door should last for decades if protected from water and sun damage by correctly chosen and applied paint.

Thanks both! I'll get proper paint
