Not that excited about house

We are moving towards the contract signing stage of buying our first house. Is it normal to not be that excited about the house you are buying?? I am more nervous than excited. We are buying an older house that's quite worn that will need a bit of doing up.

Is it normal not to feel that excited?

Moving and buying a home, especially your first, is one of life's most stressful events. I think it's entirely normal to feel a bit flat about it.

yes, because if you are "sensible" then the first house choice is often pragmatic
ie the best compromise house you can find for price, affordability, location and in your case, do up ability.

I think it depends why you're not excited.

If it's because of the daunting prospect of a big debt over many years - normal.

If it's because it's not your dream, forever home (yet) - normal.

If you don't want to tie yourself to the person you're buying with, or genuinely think you've overpaid or reached too far on the mortgage, or you've bitten off more than you can chew in terms of work - not too late to pull out.

I’ve not been hugely excited by any of my house purchases. Certainly wasn’t bothered by our third house but it fits the bill for family life.

It's probably because you live in the real world and not in a movie or on a social media platform. If you did you'd be all mood boards and #foreverhome and #mysanctuary and #propertyladderbosslady or somesuch nonsense.

No need to manufacture emotions, they are what they are!

I think when you’re in there then that is when the excitement will happen and also when you’ve got the work done and the property to how you want it. There are advantages to buying a house that requires renovation. Good Luck!
