is there a way of finding out how long a house has been on the market?

I know you could just ask, but I expect estate agents would be cagey (and in any case might not know - at least officially - if the vendors have switched agent at some stage)

There is a price adjustment website but suspect it only works for those staying with same agent

Have you tried the website property snake. Not sure if its what you want but it may help.
