Post a pic of it and the pipes below it

onepieceoflollipop · 10/03/2023 22:38

Does it look like this? There are several similar variations on YouTube?

screenshot below if you search it you can watch the video.

my old vaillant had you needed to use a flat screwdriver on both valves.

on my new vaillant they are more user friendly and look like taps?

yess mine looks like the picture. A woman from the boiler company who has the same boiler as me tried to talk me througgh toping up the boiler on the phone but nothing workedd so she said wait until the engineer comes and he will show you what to do.

I have the same type and have to refill it fairly often.

Have you tried turning the one that's stuck the other way?
On mine, the lever on the left pushes upwards to open, the one on the right pushes downwards.

(I'm assuming you mean these valves)

how can i putsh a lever that is stuckk. It will not buddge

In this pic you can see the silver filling loop. It has black levers at each end. You need to open both temporarily to increase pressure.
If one of the levers is not moving try using a pair of pliers on it gently

tallyhohohoho · 11/03/2023 22:20

This is the pic showing the 2 levers. Sometimes there is just one lever

I was checking you'd tried it, that's all. I always expect to have to turn them the same way - first time I found out they don't is when I had to get a plumber out.

Xrays · 11/03/2023 22:36

You turn them, like a screw, rather than push them if that makes any sense. You have to turn them really slowly and you’ll see the pressure go up. If you fill it up too high you can bleed a radiator if you have a radiator key to lower the pressure again.

try wd40 or oil...drench it and wait a while.

I tried oil but it is still stuck. I would rather wait until Tuesday until the engineer comes and he can show me. I have had engineers raise up the presure 4 times so ar an it only took 2 minutes each time. I must be doing soething wrong I will post again after the engineere has been so report what is going on

Wd 40 is better than oil...when its fixed, apply some oil to the thread of the valves so prevent future sticking....your boiler is same as mine, if you lose pressure a lot, there is a common fault on that model, its the expansion vessel that fills up with water over a long time....mine has to be drained every 5 years as my pressure goes wobbly.

stopbeeping · 12/03/2023 15:56

Hey my husband said to use pliers or a pair of grips
He said you probably need a new filling loop

He is gas safe

I wasnt going to post for a while but I think I need to say soething.

The pressure keeps dropping in my boiler. The engineers have said that the reason is because I have a radiator that is broken. is needs bleeding but cannot be bledd because it is rusty at the botto and ha a hole in it an water would leak out . I also have a faulty imersionn boiler. Once these are both replaced they think te pressure will no longer keep dropping. I am not convinced but lets see what happens.

I asked if I could have a new boiler and they said no becausse my gas boiler is not old. My immersion boiler however is 30 years old so theey will replace it

OP posts:
Geneticsbunny · 13/03/2023 09:08

You might have a small leak somewhere if the pressure keeps dropping. We had this and we had a crack in the expansion vessel. You could ask the plumbers if they have checked the expansion vessel for leaks?

Definitely replace the radiator but the immersion heater is unlikely to be causing a leak. If it's broken and you can afford to fix it then do but it probably isn't related to the boiler pressure issue.

I would get the radiator replaced and then if it keeps happening after that you could try employing a leak detecting company to check for leaks.

This sounds strange.

If a radiator is leaking, then the sensible solution is surely to replace the radiator - and fix the fill loop that for some reason you can't operate.

Immersion boiler - what is this ? The immersion heater or a separate heater on the radiator system that uses electric ? Surely fixing this will lead to much higher bills because you will be operating electric rather than gas. And if it is on the radiator circuit it will still need a non leaking radiator circuit to operate.

Fixing the radiator should be relatively inexpensive compared to boiler repairs.

Thanks. None of these repairs are costing me because I rent from a Housing Associatio I do not like the boiler company and wish I could use another one but because the housing association have a contract with them then I am stuck withh them. I phoned them earlier to check they are still coming tonorrow because they were meant to be here last Friday but did not show up and said the apointent got cancelled (not by me). They saidd yes they are coming tomorrow.

I then wanted to find out if theeey are still coming on Thursay to give me a new radiator and immersion and the man said they have an appoinnntent to fit a new radiator. I was originnally told they would install a new immersion boiler at the same time so I tried to query this and he said we are fitting a new radiator. I tried to ask about the immersion and he just rudely shouted at me and then I tried again to ask about the immersion and he hungg up This copany is vile and I hate them. I think I am entitled to ask about the immersion but he did not want to discuss it.

So I now have no idea if I am getting a new immersion on Thursday or not and cannot ask because the phone operator will not discuss it with me. All I can do is talk to y Housing Manager and tell him what is happeening. My next proble is that if I try to ask the engineer if it is the issue you mentioned then I might be told we know what we are doing.

I am sick of the whole situation andd have no idea why my housing association has a contract with such a rubbish boiler company.

I once had a rubbish dentist and changed dentists to a very nice one but I cannot do it with this boiler copany. I was thinking of getting an independent engineer to coe and have a look and paying him but if my housing association findd out that I have got an independent person in then they will say we cannot come out to you ever again because you have bypassed our copany and used your own and if the indeendent boiler engineer does soething wrong and makes thee situation worse then we would not be able to come out and fix it because we did not cause the error so I am stuck with this rubbish copany whether I like it or not

NewBootsAndRanty · 13/03/2023 10:50

Yep, that's how housing associations work.

Flute56 · 13/03/2023 10:58

Just so you know. an imerion boiler is used when your boiler breaks down. If my imersion boiler was working then I could switch it on to get hot water until the engineers raise the pressure in my gas boiler. Immerion boiler are a back up to getting hot water when your boiler breks down. When my boiler first packed up th engineer tried to switch on the immereion boiler but it caused my electricity to go off so he quickly switched it off and my electricity came back on so he said do not use it because it could cause my electricity to fail and not come on again and then I would totally be left without ANY electricity whatsoever, no lights no anything like a powere cut

OK. I understand.

You mean what I would call an immersion heater rather than an immersion boiler.

They do tend to draw a lot of current and normally are on their own separate breaker.

Anyway, good luck with your radiator fix.

SchoolTripDrama · 13/03/2023 12:03

You seriously don't know how to tip up the pressure on your boiler? My goodness.

Boiler upddate............... The engineer came round. He raised the pressure and showed me how to do it. Basically you turn the two taps roundd and I previously said the bottom one wass stuck. It was not stuck. I wa trying to turn it the wrong way and it can only be turned one way. The top one turns clockwise and the bottom one turns anti clockwise. i thought you turned both of them clockwise.

I asked about the expansion vessel because someone on here said hers was caused by a leaking expansion vessell. He checked that and saidd it was fine and said get the new radiator andd immersion boiler fitted and see if the boiler holds the pressure. If it still drops then they will come out again and investigate further

I pointed out twice that it was likely that the 'stuck' one turned in the other direction - did you even try doing that? Confused
