Cost of replacing asbestos roof

Morning,

So we’re looking at replacing the roof on our detached bungalow but it does contain asbestos. Has anyone had any experience with this? Timings and cost etc. We’re in the East of UK.
TIA

A small fortune unfortunately....

Get someone in to check what type of asbestos it is as there are different types and then get a few quotes.

To do it properly (which you should) it takes days and the specialist company has to set up decontamination units in the space etc etc. we paid £4K a few years ago to get a double garage roof removed.

No way to tell without knowing te type of asbestos. It is possible to overlay with a new roof but you'd need structural engineer to determine. Get the experts out.

Thank you all. We’ll start getting quotations.

Brace yourself

We had the corrugated asbestos roof on our old garage capped & felted and it was very successful, still perfect 10-years later when we moved.

First it was inspected to check that it was structurally sound, the corrugated surface was then cleaned and a thick moulded profile was laid over the top. This matched the corrugations but left a flat upper surface which was hot felted in the normal way (don't you just love that smell!!!).
Had an insurance backed 10yr warranty.

An added bonus was that the profile acted as insulation meaning the garage (which OH used as his den) was much warmer and less prone to condensation.

Just reading the OP again and I now assume you have a pitched roof which would not be suitable for capping like my PP. ☹️

Is it roof tiles or sheeting?

This website gives some ballpark figures for a typical garage roof and for tiles.

They’re roof tiles I believe.
