Questions about DIY Kitchens and their planner

OK very kind MNetters told me to go and look at DIY Kitchens and I think it might work for us but I have some questions

  1. I cant make the wall units any lower than the are - am I being daft?

  2. How do you get the oven housing in to the plan - I've been all the way through about 5 times

  3. does the bottom of the oven housing not line up with the drawers which will annoy me immensely!!

  4. it says I can have samples - if I pick an odd colour does that still work?

Probably more questions to come

  1. can you set a cupboard on an angle?

The planner is fairly restricted and is there just for illustration really. I don't thing you can alter the height of wall units on the planner, but obviously would be able to have them wherever and however you like in real life. The same goes with having a unit on an angle

Are you on Facebook? If so, this group is a goldmine. It's run independently of DIY but they have a staff member account so can often a see queries. They also have independent planners who are often very happy to answer questions.

You will find that lots of your questions will have already been asked by someone in the group!

Just a quick plug for diy kitchens! Mine is from there and it's lovely!!

KatyMac · 16/01/2023 10:25

Thanks @PilchardsonToast did you go for a painted one? Fb is saying the paint quality is poor

OP posts:
PilchardsonToast · 16/01/2023 11:08

I have the handleless style and the paint job seems great, no peeling or variance in quality at all...we've had it 3 years now

KatyMac · 16/01/2023 13:12

I really want a colourful kitchen

So I'm quite tempted

I resarched it a lot before buying and was quite worried cos some reviewers said the DIYK paint was soft and marked easily. In the end I figured the price difference was worth the risk.

My paint is perfect and remains unmarked despite taking some massive knocks 😀

I suspect a lot of luck is involved with different paint batches 🤷‍♀️

Thesonglastslonger · 16/01/2023 13:46

Ps am a huge DIY-K fan but the planner tool is only useful in 2d, the 3d mock up is crappy, don’t worry about it just make sure you understand your design.

skippy67 · 16/01/2023 14:02

I'm on that fb group, but only found it after my kitchen was installed 😅
I have a painted kitchen, no issues whatsoever with paint chipping. I'd thoroughly recommend DIY Kitchens.

Sanch1 · 16/01/2023 14:15

I found that DIY were really helpful on the phone. I phoned a few times when grappling with the planner and they were really good.

KatyMac · 16/01/2023 22:14

Thanks

I like the purple!!

Had my DIY Kitchen since 2016 still love it but issues with some paint chips and the fact they don’t have the same blend of paint to cover them!

I was cheeky and saw a design I liked from a extremely high end kitchen company then planned it with howdens to get a rough price and then copied the design myself with DIY. Managed to order everything correctly.

ginislife · 16/01/2023 22:29

I love my 3 year old turquoise diy kitchen. It's not painted though, it's high gloss.

KatyMac · 17/01/2023 19:02

Ooo turquoise!! Yum

I've used my ikea design

OP posts:
KatyMac · 19/01/2023 18:13

I may have to go back to ikea as DIY kitchens are too expensive it doubled between the price in the top right hand corner and the final price!😳😳😢

OP posts:
CasperGutman · 19/01/2023 20:27

Oh no! Did you have the planner set to show just the price of the units? I think I did that too at first. There's an option to switch it to include the other stuff too. ☹️

KatyMac · 19/01/2023 22:56

Oh yeah!

Damn didn't realise it was an option

I cant work out what ovens fit in what housing when i look at ao and ikea cupboards

OP posts:
CasperGutman · 20/01/2023 09:07

What kind of oven do you want? Maybe someone more familiar with IKEA kitchens can help pick out the right housing....

CoffeeIsMyMiddleName · 20/01/2023 09:17

We have a DIY Kitchen. I’ve noticed two chips and one was after I sort of threw a pair of scissors point first towards an end panel….basically, the paint quality is fine. Ours is a solid wood painted Linwood. I think more people have had issues with bespoke colours than standard but that’s just my observation from hanging out on the group for a while.

We didn’t compare with Ikea but ours worked out at about half the price of Howdens for the units (though I don’t think our builder gets a very good discount with Howdens).

I’d definitely recommend them but it is different from ordering from somewhere like Howdens as if you make a mistake, you can’t swap stuff in and out - you have to do an additional order and wait 3 weeks for any missing units. I would strongly recommend paying one of the independent designers on that page (Karen from OnePlan is amazing and I wish we’d used her) as it will cost a few hundred pounds but potentially save a lot in terms of both a better design and giving you an accurate shopping list.
