Has anyone been on a short course?

Me and hubby are not very good at DIY, were both willing to give it a try but don't really know where to start.
We've moving into a house which needs lots of work and are struggling getting trades, and when we do get quotes they are astronomical.
Iv seen some short course out our local college, 10 weeks (1 evening per week for 4 hours), one course is in plastering and the other general DIY, has anyone done anything simular and found it worthwhile? Or am I kidding myself that I learn to plaster for example in 10 weeks?

Not sure where you're located but there's a course with the BTC (builder training centre) from memory. It's two days over a weekend and meant to give quite good content. I believe it's based near Surrey way.
