Relocating to Winchester

We are a young family likely to be relocating to Winchester next year and excited to make the move. I know it is a pricey area though. We have a budget of £950k/£1000,000. Will this get us a 4/5 bed on the outskirts? I have seen lots of new builds around the area although not much on the market although hopefully that is just because of Christmas approaching. Also, please could anyone tell me their experiences of living there? We will need to commute to London occasionally. Do others find this ok? Many thanks

A lot of young families like the St Cross area but like other people have said I would have a look at Twyford. There’s lots going on in the village and it’s really easy to get to town too including a good cycleway. Anywhere on the Otterbourne Road has regular buses into Winchester and houses are cheaper if you are prepared to compromise on road noise from the M3. You need to make friends with the local estate agents as a lot of good properties are sold before they are even advertised, although that may change given current economic circumstances. They will have a waiting list of people wanting to buy in certain locations so showing you are a serious buyer is important.

Winchester town centre is chock-full of homeless people but I guess that's the same everywhere these days.

Thanks so much everyone, you've been so helpful! And great advice @SarahMused to befriend the local estate agents. I will get on the case.

Otterbourne road is busy, 40mph off and on so people drive down pretty fast. I wouldn't want to live on it with young DCs.

You have to cycle down 40/50mph roads with no street lighting to get out of Twyford so I never found it a good cycleway! The bit from the viaduct along the river is lovely though.

St Cross Road is also busy but it is a lovely location.
