Crown trade colour matching for LG and F&B

Has anyone had experiences good or bad with crown trade colour matching please? Decorator is trying to persuade me to use it. He says (and often heard this) that F and B isn’t that great, and although Little Greene is good the colour matching is good too. I’ve used both F&B and LG in the past and do like the colours and never had a problem - apart from FB external paint which was poor.
I know people really recommend Johnstone’s or Brewers colour matching on here but haven’t seen anything about Crown. I do want the chalky flat period look of the above and wonder if they can replicate it? Budget wise it would be helpful!

thanks

Our decorator said F&B don't offer trade discount, so that makes a lot of decorators not recommend it as they usually pocket the difference.

Not sure of accuracy of this, but it's interesting as I've never had a problem with f&b

Thanks - I certainly have the feeling that trade accounts have benefits for the decorator. I just wondered if Crown lives up to Johnstone’s colour matching which is always praised on here.

This might be useful to you, although it doesn't cover all of the newer paint designers.

Don't know about colour matching, but quality - wise, LG is the bee's knees. It's just so much better than anything else I've used. Lovely to apply, long lasting, wipes clean, great depth of colour.

I think the colours are not that hard to reproduce but the flat chalky texture is much harder.

LoveLabradors · 30/09/2022 22:10

@mynameisnotkate That’s what I wondered too. @FuzzyPuffling yes they are superb quality. Might get some
colour matching samples and see. Perhaps a mixture - the real deal for well used rooms and colour match for less well used spaces. Thanks all for your thoughts

I’ve matched a few F&B colours to Crown Extreme Clean Matt (I think that’s the name), with good results. Last time I planned to use Little Greene but my decorator persuaded me to match to Johnstones - the colour match was almost perfect but it marks with water/wiping, even though it’s supposed to be wipeable, unlike the Crown, which you can wipe without leaving any trace.

Our decorator colour matched F&B Skimming Stone in Crown and it's lovely and true to colour

Our decorator gets really narky about me insisting on LG, it is so much better quality, it’s highly pigmented and lasts a lot longer than trade paint.
We recently had a decorator at a holiday let we have, he he’d never used LG before but was mightily impressed it covered in 1 coat not 2 so was value for money.

I've just listened to a podcast about paint. 5 paints of differering quality/prices were tested at a lab, and a few experts were asked for their opinions.

Seems that trade paint is as good as expensive designer paint, but trade paint is better if applied by a professional decorator. Designer paint will give a good finish if applied by a non professional, apparently it has a good 'hide quality'.

I got a crown colour match for farrow and ball and it was dreadful. If you want to colour match dulux is the best.

Rascalsandradishes · 01/10/2022 23:22

@Salome61 would you mind sharing what the podcast is called? Thanks Smile

Why don't people buy the paint themselves? If the worry is about mark ups? For every trade we use we buy the materials/paints etc.

Then you choose? You have control over colours, quality and paints.

Brewers would be my choice, and is cheaper than crown mixing.

I did colour match with Crown. It was great!

Johnson's make LG I think, they have done fantastic colour matches for LG F&B and also my kitchen cupboard door!
