Kitchen tiles - shiny and glossy or matt?

Hi,

Finally getting round to get our kitchen done. Its just a replacement of old kitchen cabinets and tiles; 3m x 3m. Should we go for shiny floor tiles or matt? Cupboards are gloss white ane worktop white quartz and lighting is spotlights
Modern contemporary house decor. Going for a luxe look.

Are shiny tiles easy to keep shiny? Do matt tiles look drab?

Tia x

Whatever you get, don't get white. Absolute hell to keep clean.

Matt. Shiny ones show every wipe of a cloth

Choc2022 · 21/09/2022 00:17

As in smears? Interesting. I like the bounce of light from shiny though.

Matt. I always feel like I’m going to slip on shiny ones even if they’re not slippery. And they are slippery as hell when wet.

Matt tiles- and I would have chosen matt cabinet doors too!!!

Unless you wipe daily- they will show every finger print and mark going.

AuntTwacky · 21/09/2022 01:07

Matt definitely

Heronwatcher · 21/09/2022 07:25

Not shiny. With all that white and spotlights it will look like a mortuary. What about something with a bit of texture like vinyl plank or herringbone- much better for upkeep and warmer too.

Porridgeislife · 21/09/2022 07:33

Matt. We’ve inherited black gloss cabinets, black granite worktops and white shiny tiles. I don’t think there is a more difficult combination to keep looking clean. The tiles ALWAYS look dirty.

Porridgeislife · 21/09/2022 07:34

Matte, sorry. Not matte.

Carrieonmywaywardsun · 21/09/2022 07:34

Matt but textured. Something like slate tiles if that suits your decor

DreadingWinter · 21/09/2022 08:12

Matte. Anything shiny is a nightmare to keep looking good. The slightest mark shows and grease from cooking seems to cling to tiles and splashbacks. Shiny floors are really dangerous. My neighbour had a gorgeous glossy floor and slipped resulting in lots of injuries.

Thanks everyone. Very helpful in decision making. Matte it is. Oooh hadnt considered vinyl or poss even laminate to match the rest of the downstairs floor?

Tiles are very cold, I’d go for fake wood laminate (or you can get tile patterned LVT).

Shiny look fabulous and will stay that way as long as you have no pets, never splash water on them or allow anyone to walk on them. We had them in a new build because they looked great in the showhouse. If we had not have been moving again I would have had them taken up. Shiny tiles are the worst mistake we have ever made when buying a new home.

We now have LVT in our kitchen, dining room and family room - need minimal care and look great.

VeridicalVagabond · 21/09/2022 10:29

You're going to spend every day for the rest of your life cleaning that kitchen. Gloss and quartz, especially in white, show every tiny mark. Have fun.

Choc2022 · 22/09/2022 02:08

Thanks I'll look into LVT. I know re cleaning, the look just fits our decor! We are considering solid/compact laminate instead just to keep costs down.

We wanted quartz worktops, but they were £4k, our whole budget was 10k! 2 boards of compact Laminate under £300 with large offcuts left. I think it looks nicer as it's thinner.

We went for double compact Laminate (lava?) from magnet, with white gloss cupboards and granite antibacterial "floorboard" anti slip tiles from Topps tiles.

There's old pictures below, should have put the light on! You can see the floor better in the cat pic.
