Recommendations for new kitchen

I am looking at getting a new kitchen to replace an awful one that came with the flat. Up until now, we've chosen Rational kitchens - a German (or now Italian?) company - which I like for quality and variety of units, including mid-height. But our retailer, who gave us generous discounts, is no longer in business and it seems far too pricey. I've inquired into other German kitchens, but they also seem too pricey and don't necessarily have Rational's benefits.

So I will have to compromise. I'm starting to look at British kitchens. The base units are all 72cm, not Rational's 78cm with a 10cm plinth - more space for storage. The variety in size just isn't there. And I'm not convinced by flat-packed kitchens, as they are more expensive to install. Howdens gets good reviews, but are opaque in prices and and everything has to be done through a builder. Not a problem now, but could be at a later stage. DIY gets good reviews - I like the look of their Innova Luca, but they don't do mid-heights, which I would like to have.

I would appreciate your help and any experience of good quality budget kitchens. I like modern design, handleless and matt finish. We haven't decided yet between a big family kitchen with island unit or a smaller but more efficient kitchen with peninsula and open plan to the dining room, which would give space for improvement to adjacent bedroom. But that is another discussion.

Thanks, Mumsnet people.

Thanks for the warning. Sad.

I got a DIY kitchens kitchen this year and wasn't that impressed with the finish to be honest. Nothing critical, just stuff like the back of the melamine parts being rough and it showing in the joins.

Agree that Wren is a nightmare.

I've been designing my new kitchen and utility with Magnet and Howdens. Magnet quoted £25000 (with appliances) and my units came to £20000! Howdens quoted £16000 (without appliances I want to choose my own).
So I plugged their design into DIY Kitchens and it came out at £11000 (without appliances). I've just got Howdens to offer their best price now which is £12000 so will go with them as I prefer having a shop I can drive to and moan at as required. They also do plinth drawers!
I've heard good things about DIY kitchens but interesting to hear about the reduction in quality and customer service.

Btw I highly recommend googling kitchen design tips there is a mumsnet thread that links to an older thread about kitchen design tips. Very useful read when considering what storage you need and planning tips.

EatingPeanutButterWithASpoon Yes it is quite scary when you choose a kitchen based on recommendations and good reviews and just as you go with them, they are headed for a downturn. We aren't ready to go for quotations yet. Just trying to fit in design. Colour confusing. Price of quartz scary.
