PAINTING AROUND A LARGE OVERMANTEL

Hi. We want to paint our living room but there is a large, heavy overmantel in situ. Is it possible to paint around it somehow otherwise it will be very costly to get someone in to take it down and then put it back when we're finished? Thanks

I don't understand why you think it needs to be removed and put back, just paint round it by, erm, painting round it.

Yep I could do but it will be difficult to paint around the edges so that's why I was asking especially as I have to try and get the new colour right up to or just underneath the overmantel without getting paint on it. Could mask it off put it's silver painted and I don't want to pull that colour off.

Wouldn't removing it and replacing it cause damage to the wall that would need to be touched up anyway?

i think you just have to be careful painting round it. Can you try some masking tape on a place that won't show? If you are painting the walls with emulsion then you could wipe off any mistakes with a damp cloth.

Paint right up to the mantel using tiny artists brushes for greater accuracy and then fill in behind with bigger brushes. It takes time & care but is doable.

Thanks for tips all. I think using the tiny artists brushes is a great idea so will do that.
