How to rescue a badly painted front door

DH has painted our front door. Badly. Very badly. Thick blobs of paint, brush strokes going every which way, he seems to have some some odd bits on the panels where he’s obviously noticed a dodgy patch and jabbed some paint at it.

I haven’t mentioned it as he’s quite impressed with his efforts and I don’t want to piss on his parade on a sunny Saturday afternoon but any guidance as to how I fix it at a later date?

Is it just a case of sanding down with a fine sandpaper before giving it another coat or will this be adding insult to injury to the poor door?

Yes, sand it down. Reasonably thoroughly. Then repaint.

Maybe make the paint a bit thinner next time, if he's having another go.

You might need to leave it a while for the paint to properly 'cure' as it could clot the sandpaper otherwise. But yes, it needs sanding & repainting. There is a specific order to paint the panels on doors so that the brushstrokes all go the right way. I'm sure you'll find a guide if you google.
