Costs of maintaining a cess pit

Hi all,
I have another thread running on a 1920's house I am considering offering on but hopefully it's ok to start a specific thread on this question on cess pits in 2022!

The details suggest that the house has a cess pit (it's a small semi-detached currently occupied as a two bed) and I would be grateful for any experience of these, maintenance and emptying costs, pros and cons etc and key questions to ask the Agents before putting in an offer as I have zero experience.

Thank you so much in advance.

Can't give you prices but before we got a septic tank we used green apple sludge company to deal with a pit. They might be able to give you a ballpark number over the phone for an average pit for the size house you're looking at?

I emptied a 1000L tank last week on southeast - £169.
You should use minimal bleach products, only the 3Ps down the loo - ideally only white paper.
You need to find out if it complies with current legislation or will it need to be changed to triple tank septic tank or sewage treatment plant.

Thank you @TwinkleToesStrikesAgain @Lonecatwithkitten

I've emailed agent to find out the current arrangement with emptying and maintenance.

How do I find out if it's compliant? Is that a survey job or do I insist on a clear answer from vendor at this stage?

This is a link to a blog about the new regulations. This should be in your enquiries that your solicitor/surveyor does.
You want to know how often is it emptied who buy, ask for a waste transfer notice it will tell you how much was removed and when.
Check it is actually a cess pit - does not release into the water course.
