Please settle an argument

DH and I are arguing about the downstairs loo. It is a small room 2m by 1.2m. It is currently stripped back ready for plastering and then tiling. Obviously the room has a loo and will shortly have a vanity unit and sink too.

I have bought the following tiles which I love.

www.tiles-direct.com/bathroom-tiles-c47/kimono-tiles-c1403

DH likes them too. But he says we can't have the same tiles on the walls as on the floor whereas I say we can. The plan is to tile the floor and then half way up the walls.

Please could you tell me who is right?

I agree with your DH

itsthesoundofthepolice · 21/06/2022 22:56

Times Are too busy for floor and 1/2 height on all walks in my opinion. It could look nice to have the floor and one wall tiled full height either behind the vanity or behind the toilet to break up the pattern a bit

EL8888 · 21/06/2022 22:58

Theoretically you could. But it would be way way too much with that pattern

Edinvillian · 21/06/2022 23:52

As others have said, it's too busy. If it was a plain tile then maybe,

SpidersAreShitheads · 22/06/2022 08:14

Hucklead · 21/06/2022 21:58

I think it will look ace.

This looks amazing but it's not what OP is suggesting. This is fine as the side walls are plain and the back wall has the bath to break it up.

In a really small room the OP's tiles would be dizzying. On the floor and on one feature wall in a bigger space, lovely! On the floor and walls in a small cloakroom, absolutely not.

Team DH. Sorry OP. (And I normally like quite loud patterns but this is a no from me. )

TwoSecondsLater · 22/06/2022 08:19

Team Dh, sorry. It will just feel too much. The compromise would be one wall behind the loo so the white of the toilet will break it up but another tile on the other walls. You could pick a tone of colour from the tile and have a plain version of that.

It won't look like Hucklead has posted because that has a massive chunk of white breaking it up, it will look more like Entertaining has posted.

JuneJubilee · 22/06/2022 08:24

I'm in the middle. I'd do the floor, up behind & beside the toilet (but only bowl height (3 sides))

maybe around the vanity/sink depending on how big it is, where it is etc.

Whatthefuck3456 · 22/06/2022 08:37

Team OP, this would looks brilliant

KellynchHall · 22/06/2022 23:24

thanks for all your comments, it seems the majority are siding with DH, obviously I'll keep that quiet and simply tell him I've changed my mind!

I am now confused over what to do.

I could tile floor and then the wall the vanity and toilet are on.

Or I could tile the walls with these tiles and then choose a new tile for the floor. If I did this I think I'll struggle to find anything that really works.

Print it out and paper the floor / wall. See what you think.

It's not a big room so it may not be enough to look busy anyway, iyswim. I think floor and walls would be great. If you do just floor then there may not be enough of it to make an impact.

BlueMongoose · 25/06/2022 19:16

My 2ps worth is that they are too fussy to be in anything but a very limited area. And if on the floor it would be nigh on impossible to see if the floor was clean.

FlatBottomedGirl · 25/06/2022 19:23

Do it! It would be too much if it was floor and full walls but only half walls is fine. Downstairs loo is the right room to be a bit adventurous with your decor.

Nice tiles but I'm with your DH. It's too much in a small room for floor and wall

Agree

SusieSimpleman · 25/06/2022 19:43

Oof, your DH is right. Far too much for both floor and walls.

CellophaneFlower · 26/06/2022 18:48

I think it will work.

I disagree with those that say it's too busy for a small space - I think the fact it's a small area means you can get away with it.

I love seeing downstairs loos that are a bit different, rather than just keeping them neutral to make them appear bigger, which never works!

JuneJubilee · 26/06/2022 20:18

@KellynchHall

have you decided?

I still think floor, behind/around the loo depending on layout, possibly as a splash back above the sink & save yourselves some £££ and paint the rest in a washable bathroom paint. Some nice colours in the tiles.

Arewethebadguys · 26/06/2022 20:22

Team OP! Life's too short for regrets! 😀

SunshineAndFizz · 26/06/2022 20:39

Ooof too much.

Use on the floor only and go plain on the walls.

KellynchHall · 26/06/2022 23:18

@JuneJubilee still considering options. I think most likely I'll do floor and wall behind loo and vanity. The layout is that you walk in the short end of the room and vanity and loo are immediately on the right on the longer wall so it would work to give a splashback.

Alternatively I will pick out some slate tiles for the floor and then tile part way up on all walls with the patterned ones.

I wish I was brave enough just to go for it because I still think it would look good. While the tiles are very patterned it's not that in your face. We had them in hall and kitchen at my old house and they looked great.

@BlueMongoose The fact that you can't see if they're dirty or not is partly why I love them so much. I have low standards.

@KellynchHall

We had them in hall and kitchen at my old house and they looked great

then you're FAR better placed than any of us to know whether they're 'too much' or not!! 🤣🤣

what would DH think of 'going for it' and if he really hates it, redoing them in a year or so? (He'll be used to them by then & probably won't want the hassle/expense!!)

besides, it's only the downstairs loo, it's not like it's a main room, say the kitchen!!

JuneJubilee · 27/06/2022 09:33

Oh & I'm with you entirely on the 'you can't see the dirt'. I too thought that's a bonus!
