Fucking hell - Margate. I went there a couple of years ago - it was like Dawn of the Dead. I would not live there.

I've lived in Thanet for about 10 years: SPOILER ALERT! Worst Decision Ever, and I've lived in some pretty odd places over the years. Almost all the positive comments I have recebtly read about Margate online come from (I suspect) DFLs who are trying to entice other DFLs to buy their overpriced houses/failing home-knitted muesli businesses, so that they themselves can return to relative civilisation. Don't be sucked in by the locals bragging about the Turner and Dreamland. Trust me, the former is nothing to brag about - though the exhibition which juxtaposed the work of Turner with that of Tracey Emin was hilarious - and the latter is to be avoided. Of course, the really good thing about Dreamland is that any house within 3 or 4 miles can hear the drum & bass events without the need to buy a ticket.

Westgate and Birchington are full of speeding mobility scooters. More than 25% of the population of Westgate is over 65. On the bright side, the beaches are lovely and the infants' and primary schools are excellent. Bitchington (as it is known locally) is over 45% 65+, and a walk down the high street (very much not worth a visit) is fraught with the danger of being mowed down by someone who shouldn't be allowed out unsupervised. On the bright side, it has TWO Co-ops (nobody knows why) and a Sainsburys!

Broadstairs is mostly inoffensive, unless you don't like walking up and down hills. Ramsgate is just - well - sort of odd. The harbour is nice, the frequent violence not so much. And the fabulous new bookshops someone mentioned upthread are, one by one, closing down.

@Gonners we used to live in Canterbury for 7 years and go to the Thanet resorts a fair bit - totally agree-it attracts a lot of people thinking it's going to be like a cheap Brighton- It just isn't -
