Blinds or something else for large roof lights?

We have some very large (3m x 1.2m) roof lights in our kitchen and I’m not sure what I need to keep the sun out… any ideas? Blinds? Indoor sun shade sails? Something else?

Does anyone have anything they love for similar size roof lights and can help me with some inspiration?

Picture attached (hopefully)

My friend has sails. They catch flies but otherwise good. Just need regular cleaning.

They look lovely. No advice on a covering though.

Bump for you as I have a similar setup

Thanks @posalie !

its so hot in here today!!! I really do need some blinds or something.

Has anyone else tackled the sun / heat challenge with roof lights like these? I’m finding it hard to picture what it could look like. Any recommended suppliers?

I'd have a look for a velux style blind. You can get ones that operate with a remote too which makes life easier!

Thank you @QuestionableMouse i think that’s what I’m going to need. The prices seem a bit scary…

Has anyone used a supplier they would recommend?

I've used Blinds2Go for a Velux blind which wasn't madly expensive and has lasted well.

(it's just a pull one, not an electric one)

Your post will be really useful to the numerous people that post asking whether to have a lantern or Velux with a conventional roof. The lanterns are a nightmare if the sun comes around and the house not ideally sited so the sun needs blocking. Blinds for lanterns are a nightmare and are one reason why I went for Velux with conventional roof.

A friend who had a similar extension to me went flat roof and lantern. She had leaks (promised that they are water tight for at least 25 years) and she can't effectively block the light...the Velux type blinds don't work

Did you architect/builder not warn you? This is really common and it makes me angry that architects don’t warn people to consider and budget for serious light/heat blocking blinds.

You can get external roller shutters - have you looked into those as well as external ones?
