Secret door to utility room

Has anyone done something similar to this picture?

we’re knocking through into garage to create a doorway into new utility room and would really like to do something like this so I can make full use of that wall for floor to ceiling cupboards and hide the door.

Willbuilding regs have an issue with it? Assume not. Do I just buy cupboard door and it gets fit on a normal door?!

thanks!

I don't know the answer but think it looks great!

Me too! I just hope my builder doesn’t say that it’s too much effort

Oh that is genius! Sod the utility though, I'd want a mummy cave where the kids can't find me 😆

I'm sure your builder will think it's too much effort, but you're paying him... and I'm sure someone else will make it if he won't!

I want one of these. They are called jib doors I think?

Be aware that you are creating a narrow corridor due to the depth of cupboards and fridge. My frustration with my house is that doorways are cluttered and narrow and feel claustrophobic, so that would annoy me.
Standard kitchen units (600 or 800mm) and standard doors (762mm / 30 inches and 838mm / 33 inches) aren't the same size so it will probably be a custom build.

We have exactly this. It's a full scullery behind the secret door! We absolutely love it. Keeps the main kitchen diner spotless as all the cooking and mess is hidden behind!!

My inlaws did this. What looks like a plain run of tall cabinets , the last door leads into lovely size pantry. Also has small appliances and bulky items that would take up a whole cabinet.
Looks really sleek

Great to hear others have done it and it works well!

@Penguinsmum did you have a carpenter or someone similar fit a custom built door or did they work from a kitchen cabinet door?

Ours is a Normal long line of standard full length cabinets then 2 open and behind is our scullery. I'll try to attach some pics

The other possibility is to have a pocket door which slides into the wall cavity so whilst it's not a secret door, you can make use of the wall space on either side of the door (and in the utility room behind as you don't have to allow any room for the door to swing open).

I love it! Top tip: put as much thickness as you can on the utility door to cut down the washing machine noise. Also consider extra sound insulation on that wall. Wish I’d done that…
