Driveway regularly used for turning - deterrent ideas?

3girlsmama · 21/04/2022 19:15

Looking for solutions/new ideas, please.
We live in a cul de sac near a park, and people increasingly drive in and, instead of reversing out, use our drive to turn. It irrationally irritates me & I'm convinced someone will tip our car one day. (DH is not that bothered, but I see it multiple times daily as I WFH).

It's awkward to get a gate due to the boundary layout next door & current hedge by our driveway bit.

I priced an automated bollard & it was €€€ over budget.

So, manual retractable bollard? Some another retractable thingy?! Anything new or tried and tested in a similar set-up?

There is a no throughway road sign at the entrance to the cul de sac, but just the image, not the words & I'm not convinced people know what it means... I'm thinking of buying a 'no through way' or 'dead end' sign first to see if that makes any difference.

Thanks!

Come on OP - the site may have changed but the rules haven't!!

We need a diagram!!! Smile

Smartiepants79 · 21/04/2022 19:19

A sign saying private drive, no turning might a first start.
does it really affect you enough for this to be such a big deal?

AccommodatingAlice · 21/04/2022 19:20

If you can’t have a gate, are you able to put posts up so that a chain could hang between them? You would only then need to unhook it to drive out but a postie could step over for delivering Mail.

Ilikewinter · 21/04/2022 19:20

Yeah that would drive me mad to, what about one of those metal posts .... dont know the technical term!

Justkeeppedaling · 21/04/2022 19:22

Can you leave your car right at the end of the drive, or across it, so people can't reverse into it?

DockOTheBay · 21/04/2022 19:23

Plant pot that you can move when you need to get your car out?

Dillydollydingdong · 21/04/2022 19:23

Why does it bother you so much? People come down your road by mistake and somehow or other, have to get out again. No one's done any damage. You're just being territorial.

Krakenchorus · 21/04/2022 19:23

People are using your drive as the start of their 3 point turn, I assume you mean? And no one has ever damaged your car or property? Get over yourself. It does indeed 'irrationally' irritate you.

PraiseBee · 21/04/2022 19:24

Diagram please.
Park your car further down your drive so people cannot turn in it? Strategically placed wheely bins if you're lucky enough to have them?

I was thinking this

Idontevenknow · 21/04/2022 19:26

I dont think I would waste any money trying to deter this, not that big of a deal. I would maybe get a door camera that covers the drive if you're worried about damage

MrsDrDear · 21/04/2022 19:29

A sign won't make any difference. We live in a no through road.
I said to a neighbour last week, after many more vans trying to turn around, we should have some sort of sign up.
She said we have, it's been up for the 20+ years you've lived here🙄.
I have never noticed.

As previous suggestion, leave car on the edge of the drive.

Frazzled2207 · 21/04/2022 19:29

Strategically placed plant pot.

and/or a sign saying -private drive no turning. See quite a lot of those round here so presumably people think that they work.

tkwal · 21/04/2022 19:29

Two low posts with a rope/ chain and visibility sticker in the centre and a clip on fastener. Easy for you to take down when you need to and enough to deter strangers

3girlsmama · 21/04/2022 19:36

I love that nothing really changes on MN 😀Yes, I did say irrationally, but I didn't put it in AIBU because it's a solution I'm aiming for rather than to know if people think I'm allowed be annoyed by it - if you get me.

I don't know for sure if it's that people don't realise it's a dead-end or if they just think of it as a convenient spot to drop off near the park. Probably a mix. I should probably explain the irritation is compounded by drivers often dropping or collecting people but idling directly outside our drive blocking it. It's the usual 'I won't be long' brigade, but cumulatively, it grates when it's multiple times in succession & especially when I wouldn't do that.

I'll try to add a diagram. Thanks for the suggestions so far!

Penguin bollards. I can't believe you didn't post in AIBU. 🐧🐧🐧😉

Mumsnut · 21/04/2022 19:37

We had a tree down across our road a few years ago (road is a bit of a rat run). Our house was the closest one to the tree that had a comfortably large drive rather than a parking pad. It is gravel on hard pack, and by the end of the day the surface near the entrance was bare of gravel and had huge divots in the underlying stratum, because of people using it to turn. So if your volume of cfers is high, I'd put in a bollard.

Maydaysoonenough · 21/04/2022 19:38

Line of traffic cones...

Dougieowner · 21/04/2022 19:40

A manual security post would do the job, I can thoroughly recommend Centinal.

I use them for security (they are amongst the best) and unlike a retractable one they don't need deep foundations and are not cumbersome or as flimsy as the fold down ones secured with a padlock.

FleeceNavidadfromtheSheep · 21/04/2022 20:02

I've noticed this on my drive and I'm going to buy a huge boulder!

Op, I have the same issue. I am looking to buy a driveway chain fence to deter. My main problem is that the vans that are doing it have now damaged my driveway path and have broken several slabs

I can't believe it took this many posts before someone said penguin bolllards 😆😆😆
MrsSkylerWhite · 21/04/2022 21:07

Electric gate?

IncessantNameChanger · 21/04/2022 21:13

How about a low loose chain that you use to cover the entrance? They are fine to drive over but it would make most people think twice. A driveway right outside the local school has this
