aIBU to spend £8K on a greenhouse

Small garden - you can see the greenhouse very easily from the house - it's the main view. So I've priced up a wooden greenhouse. £8K including shipping (I live on an Island) and installation.

I could get a very cheap aluminium, or a nicer aluminium for less.

I think the wooden one will look better - could potentially be a garden room for someone if we move...

I'm trying to justify it really.

Walls can also collapse. My neighbours did, into my garden.

@catwomando

the frameless one is rather lovely

I hear ya, OP.
I’ve moved recently so am greenhouseless until next spring, at the earliest. I miss it so much.

(And I’m nowhere near fifty! Grin )

I have an Alton greenhouse - it’s an evolution lean to so not as beautiful as yours but still looks nice rather than just utilitarian in the garden. It’s very robust, has not caused a moment’s concern in recent storms and minimal maintenance. I’d not hesitate to recommend the brand. Yes it’s a lot of money but it’s also possible to spend much more - see e.g. Alitex.

The frameless greenhouses are amazing. But you’d have to be so tidy.

Omg those alitex greenhouses. There’s no price…

Right the alitex makes me feel better about my choice. They are beautiful though….

Do it. I have that exact greenhouse house and love it. I generally don't like spending money but have never regretted buying it. It makes me happy every time I see it. I use it all year round, even if just to sit and have coffee out of the wind. It makes a great vantage point to look out from.

BarrelOfOtters2 · 13/04/2022 07:44

Hiya @Sprig1. Does it take any maintenance?

Mine is 4 yes old and I haven't done any yet. I want the colour to weather down nicely. I will probably treat it in a couple of years with whatever Alton recommend.

Thank you....

Greenhouse up - and I'd delighted. It's been months arriving and then bits missing - and the glass won't be in till next week. But I'm chuffed to bits - it's the wooden one in my Original Post and looks great.

Amazing.
I got my first tomato of the year today!

I'm a 50-something-year-old woman, and last year I bought a second-hand one on ebay for less than £150 - then persuaded DH to help me dismantle it and reassemble it. If we costed our time, it would probably have cost more than a new one, as DH pointed out more than once😁Anyway, I had my first tomato of the year yesterday!

Brilliant. I am pleased that you went for it.

BarrelOfOtters2 · 20/07/2022 20:17

@Gastonia the most expensive tomato in the world! Sure it was fabulous…

Gastonia · 20/07/2022 20:27

I carefully cut it into pieces for the whole family to enjoy. 😂

I'm sure you'll have many years of enjoyment with your greenhouse! It looks fab.

garlictwist · 21/07/2022 06:23

That's pretty much the greenhouse or next door neighbours have. It's nice looking as greenhouses go, but I think it would be way too small to be a garden room.

THisbackwithavengeance · 21/07/2022 08:27

Why not, if you can afford it and you think it's worth it?

Jeff Bezos doesn't ask anyone if he's being unreasonable to spunk billions on flying to space.

FictionalCharacter · 21/07/2022 08:31

Very nice, but no way could it be a garden room for someone if you move.

GardenHome · 21/07/2022 18:04

Congratulations!

You will never regret it. Are you going for beds or all paved?

The chair is non negotiable, a potting table really useful. And those little tiny shelves, near the roof have been really useful.

Tegelflughafen · 21/07/2022 18:30

@Gastonia we had one second hand too. Dp is a gardener to some very wealthy clients. One of his elderly ones sadly passed away and as a thank you for 15 years service her children gave him the Hartley one sat in the garden. Bit of a task transporting and re-building it but in the end it all worked out !

Gastonia · 21/07/2022 20:26

Tegelflughafen That's lovely! What a nice gift (despite the hours of work for you!)

Our new neighbours had their large garden totally astroturfed, and put their lovely greenhouse in the skip when we weren't looking! I would have taken it down for them, and paid them for the privilege. 😀
