What size room would you class as a "double bedroom" ??? Opinions please

Will be looking to move this year and we live in a 3 bed house. We are looking at 4 beds and saw one advertising "4 double bedrooms" with their 4th bedroom being slightly smaller than my 3rd bedroom.

Our 3rd bedroom is a good size but I don't know if I would go as so far as to say it was a double. In old money it is 9'0" X 10'0" or 3.04m X 2.74m. It is just a square room no alcoves/recesses etc.

I know a standard double is 4'6" wide and therefore that bed would fit with room to put wardrobes in and it is the smallest bedroom so it would look great if I could say my house had 3 double bedrooms.

What's your opinion?

I guarantee that an estate agent would class that as a double bedroom

I think if you have a double bed in the middle, there is still 2 foot each side, and 4 ft at the end, so that sounds big enough to me.

our house would be described as three doubles and a single.

bed 1 - 18x14ft
bed 2 - 11x12ft
bed 3 - 11x10ft
bed 4 - 10x7ft.

I would say that 10ft wide would come under double size, but anything smaller than that on the other width would make it a single IYGWIM.

your third bed might make it, but personally I wouldn't say so.

we were recently looking to move tho, and the amount of houses being marketed as having 4 beds, when the smallest bedroom was 5x6ft was huge.....IMO, 5x6 is office size!

am very disallusioned by estate agents now....they all try n cram everybody into house no bigger than hamster cages!

When I saw the title of the thread I thought 10' x 8' so 10' x 9' would definitely be a double. The smallest bedroom in our last house was 10' x 8' and was marketed as a double.

You could put a double 4'6" bed on the 8ft wall and have room to walk round all sides.

Do you know that in this country we are obssessed by the number of bedrooms but in Europe everyone talks about the number of square feet. Makes you think that builders are having a laugh at our expense.

I wouldn't class it as a double either. Sorry. In fact it would put me off if I saw it advertised as a double then saw the room dimensions.

Developers are allowed to class a bedroom as a double if you can put head of bed against one wall and walk around the other three sides - completely irrelevant to them if you are then unable to fit even a bedside table in the rest of the room or the door has to open outwards so, yes, your bedroom is a double, technically.

my estate agent says as long as you can fit a double bed in it can be called a double room, even if you cant fit anything else in

That woudl eb a double - you might not fit much more thna the bed and a wardorbe thoguh dependign on configuration of widnow/radiator etc. You don't have to show it as a double if it is a family house, it might look better presented as a good size child's room, if that is appropriate to the most likely buyer.

My guest bedroom is 9'1" x 9'11" and it has a double bed in it, 2 bedside tables and there is still room to open the door and walk round.

It is currently my ds2's bedroom so it has a cotbed in it!!! Plus wardrobes, toy chest and a glider chair thing and foot rest and feels spacious.

There are lots of other 3 bed houses up for sale on my estate and their 3rd bedrooms are limited by the 6' something aspect of their size, limiting what you can put in it and where.

My house is one of the bigger 3 beds and this would be reflected in the price and I wondered if I should put "3 double bedrooms" in the main blurb to show why it is on for more money. I also have 16ft kitchen, utility, conservatory, and an en-suite which will probably be refitted with a double shower if I move the window.

But it is good to know what other people think. Thank you.
