Thaxted and surrounding areas v nice I think.
lots of places on the suffolk border are good.
Avoid near london bits, gets a bit chingford.
I live in the 'Stow, am v jealous if you're moving out of the smoke to rural idyll?

bookwormmum · 06/01/2008 22:25

Brentwood is a nice area - pricey though.

depending on where you need to get to for work, if you look at the places up the M11 there are some very beautiful villages.

Bubbaloo · 07/01/2008 20:14

Which end of Essex were you thinking of?

The following places are very nice IMO.

Upminster
Epping
Buckhurst Hill
Colchester
Brentwood

Obviously there are many other places which have nice parts and also other parts which aren't so nice.

Thorpe Bay - near Southend - fantastic shopping centre, large parks, Cliffs Pavilion for great theatre. Large out of town Waitrose. Grammar schools in Southend and Westcliff.

wheresthehamster · 07/01/2008 20:20

I meant Southend has the life. Thorpe Bay is the place to live.

Hockley and Leigh on sea are also quite nice,if you fancy being near Southend

wheresthehamster · 07/01/2008 20:26

I grew up in Leigh and loved the cockle sheds, flying kites on Two Tree island, digging for worms, the Old Town, the cliffs. I could go on and on....

Bubbaloo · 07/01/2008 20:29

I love Southend too,but only for day trips.

Divastrop · 07/01/2008 20:34

memories!

i agree-brentwood and colchester are nice and good for public transport links to london and the coast.
steer well clear of the part of essex that falls into greater london-my mumsays it was nice when she moved there 40 years ago but it is no longer...

i always liked clacton,is it a s**thole nowadays?

Bubbaloo · 07/01/2008 20:38

Divastrop-I know exactly where you mean.It was lovely there even 15-20 years ago.How things have changed....

RubySlippers · 07/01/2008 20:40

i live in Essex - it is a pretty big county and there are lots of different areas

we live on the central line catchment so that adds £££ onto property but is handy if you commute

Divastrop · 08/01/2008 20:41

bubaloo-i moved up north 10 years ago and every time i went back it had got worse.

my mother comes to visit me now

lizandlulu · 08/01/2008 20:45

my friend lives in billericay and it is very nice there. i live 150 miles away from her, so im not very knowledgable about it so dont move there on my reccomendation, but they wanted to live in brentwood and couldnt afford, and billericay was the next best thing.
just thought it hasnt been menitoned so far.
