How do I drown out the noise from next door

Please can you give me advise about sound-proofing/reducing noise from a small section of wall: I live in a terraced house and in between my house and next door is a passageway to our back gardens, built like a tunnel. The bedrooms over this share the space, so my front bedroom is over the passageway, and the neighbours back bedroom is over it, so the upstairs party wall sort of zig zags.
The problem is that I can hear their teenage son on Xbox all the time when I’m in my bedroom, and I think the noise comes through the overlap bit, straight from his bedroom. So about 120 cm wide bit of wall. Any advice would be appreciated

there are various types of soundproofing panels you can buy and have properly fitted.

For a cheap solution, i'd try egg-crate foam behind a wardrobe full of clothes.

Weirdly… as a solution for sleeping I find pink noise very effective- when I first met my DP he had nightmare neighbours!! I was surprised how effective it was

Do you share joists? Im going to talk to my builder about making sure all gaps are filled under the floor as well as looking at wall insulation.

Buy him a good quality headset and a couple of games if he uses them.

You and his parents will be happy :)

I had brilliant soundproofing fitted. It was the whole length of the house. I bought it online, had it fitted by a friend and then plastered over. It made a huge difference.

If I were you I'd do the whole wall otherwise it wont be flat.

@user1471538283 what was the soundproofing please?

GoodSister · 07/03/2022 07:09

Thank you all for your comments, I am looking for a practical solution. @TheNoonBell he probably already has headphones, and as I have said he isn’t making an unreasonable amount of noise, it’s just that I can hear him. @Lastqueenofscotland this isn’t about sleeping either. @user1471538283 please can you let us know what the actual soundproofing was, thank you

I can't tell if you are joking or not..

I bought the soundproofing on line as the companies that do this work are so expensive. Apparently it was the soundproofing used on the space station!

I had someone fit it (it's like soundproofing boards) and then a plasterer plastered over the top.
