Practical, hardwearing sofa for family with a dog

I am hoping someone can suggest a sofa that can withstand a dog jumping on it. I do clean my cocker spaniel up before he is allowed in the living room but he still brings mud in somehow. He is allowed on the sofa but I am worried about him scratching it. I desperately need a new sofa and have been waiting for the dog to get past the puppy stage and settle down a bit before buying one. I presently have a 20 year old leather sofa which as been very practical and withstood dogs, kids etc but it's looking a bit shabby now and I want a new one. I would prefer fabric but I'm not convinced about how hardwearing this would be. If anyone has any advice I would be very grateful. I dont mind spending a bit more for the right sofa. Thanks in advance.

The specific one I bought isn't available anymore so I can't link to it, but it's a microsuede finish and has held up really well to my cat's assaults. He's seemingly incapable of getting up on the couch without having a wee scratch first but you have to really examine it to see any damage.

Thanks Lilboots. That sounds like the sort of thing I'm looking for. I'll Google microsuede sofas and see if anything comes up.
