Fixed shorthold to periodic tenancy

Reading another thread has reminded me of something.

Dd is currently renting in a houseshare on a joint and several Assured Shorthold Tenancy. There have been a couple of changes of tenants since she moved in but the agent has issued new tenancy agreements each time with the correct names but still expiring on the original date.

I know when the tenancy expires they can either renew it or it goes to a periodic tenancy but I had thought that all housemates needed to agree to stay. Dd definitely wants to stay as she has another year of a Masters degree. But I read something on Shelter which now leads me to think that if even one tenant refuses to leave the tenancy automatically becomes periodic and the others are still jointly liable until they find replacement housemates (currently 3 want to stay but one might want to leave).

Have I understood that correctly?

However at the end of the following year dd might be in the opposite situation where she wants to leave but remains liable?
