Who builds in the storage?

Do I ask my builder to build storage into my build? Things like slimline storage cupboards, bookshelves in recessed walls etc? Is that part of what they could do for me?

You won’t know if you don’t ask!

Having storage built in is away to cost me approx £6000, very much retro fit, (about 40 years!) I’m sure it would be a lot cheaper if it’s done at the build stage

Builders can pick and choose what they want to do. Many will, but they are all individual.

Builders build. Generally if you have a good build quality each bit is done by a specialist in that task, so a wall is built by a brickie, has electrical wiring and insulation fitted by specialists in those functioms and is then plastered by a plasterer. If you have a single individual doing all of it; nome of it is going to be as good as if it was done by a team.

The skills of cabinetry and furniture building are very different from the skills of structural carpentry that are used for building timber frame supports for internal walls. Built in storage built by a builder will be unlikely to look as good or finished to as high a standard as if yiu commission a specialist.

As part of a long term refurbishment I had shelves on one side of a room built in by a general handyman builder, and a few years later on the other side by a specialist in cabinetry (the same person who was building the kitchen). The quality and finish of the second set is outstanding compared to the first.

Our builder would have but we found the quality of his carpenter to be pretty poor so we got the finishing bits done separately. The builder also wanted to charge lots for an extras so if you are going down this route I would recommend getting them priced into the original build quote rather than added on after.

Our builder did the sides of cupboards using normal internal stud walls which were then plastered along with the rest of the room. His electrician also did the power supply for the cupboards. We then used a specialist company to fit them out.

Previous house builder used a joiner to build shelving units, some moulding etc. all really well done.

Did the same in this house and the finish is poor, wish we’d kept an eye on it and got our own person in.
