Idle speculation after watching a film today - how much do one of those spacious white clapboard houses in the States cost? And what's their house price to income ratio like?

Not that I want to move there, I don't but just wondered. dh and I both said "wish we had a garden like that" while watching a film this afternoon. And those type of houses seem bog standard in many family movies. Are they? Is property a lot lot cheaper? Everywhere in the world?

Bloody hell 47 secs to go on a $3000 house! THat's £1.5k fgs!

I can't be doing with the mock lynchings I don't think. Nor the 'well maintained outbuildings' - dh and I ruin every house we ever buy.

WWW - this website is my guilty pleasure

bubblerock · 29/12/2007 22:36

Did you win it?? LOL

Quattrocento · 29/12/2007 22:37

Suburban houses in the US are generally larger than suburban houses in the UK and cheaper too.

But you have to live in the US to avail yourself of this house-price arbitrage opportunity. And that's kind of offputting for me. It's the lynchings I think.

Unless we have a loft in Manhattan of course but then that would be incompatible with having children and I would have to sell them first ...

WideWebWitch · 29/12/2007 22:42

Yeah, the lynchings do it for me too.
lol br, I am now browing property listings on ebay...

You have to ask yourself why these houses are on ebay and not with a realtor...

bubblerock · 29/12/2007 22:45

I think you can buy plots of land too

Don't they have those house supermarkets over there, where you can literally buy a house and they put it on your plot?

ahundredtimes · 29/12/2007 22:46

I loved the way you said realtor. Say it again.

WendyWeber · 29/12/2007 22:47

REaltor. reALtor. realTOR. REALTOR.

Which way do you like best, 100x?

I love the fact it has something called a Great Room. What is a great room? A room where great things happen? Buy it!

We honeymooned in Maine and loved it so much we were pricing up white clapperboard houses. We could have got one that was small by US standards, but positively palatial compared to out first-time-buyer terrace for less than $190,000 (OR £95,000 in real money).

I still dream about that house sometimes when I'm cramming something else into our severely limited storage space.
