bar stools on an island

Realised I was about to derail another thread, potentially

We got cheapy bar stools of ebay. They aren't very comfortable at all but we wanted to see if they were actually used. They are when we have guests - they perch.

I'm now torn - do I get comfy ones to encourage us to use them and guests to have a comfier perch.

Get rid of them to discourage the perching of more annoying guests (in laws).

Keep the uncomfy ones, which look nice and were cheap, which we don't use.

I love a bar stool! We upgraded our b&q cheapy ones as they developed an annoying squeak. We now how these in blue and I love them, so comfy to sit at.

I bought the cheapest ones Ikea sell because I didn't think we'd use them much, but DH and I found ourselves perching there a fair bit, along with guests.
DH spotted some bargain gas lift John Lewis ones on Facebook marketplace so we had those, £30 for three, like new and much comfier. I've since seen a lot of bargains on there so worth a look if you're not fussed about new.

I did discover when we bought the cheap Ikea ones that there is a difference in height between bar stools and breakfast bar stools though so bear that in mind.

The main thing in comfort is for the seat to be the right height relative to the breakfast bar, you want about 65cm for a worktop of 90cm. Also enough knee room.

We have these that are pretty comfortable, there are loads of others if you want a backrest.

@northernstars

We got these from Dunelm.
We have just got the same in blush - look great and v comfy. I think they are currently sold out now though in all colours.

I thought I'd sit at the island but don't but both DS (five and two) love to plus DH who isn't a relax and enjoy meal type.
I use the dining table mostly which surprises me.. Friends love perching at the island whilst I cook though and it's really nice. I tend to just lean on it and chat.

Have these stools from Aosom, got for the back, adjustable height, swivel and can be wiped clean!

@Citymum2one I'm hoping to get back for the office chair in the same range.

I made this from an old saddle, favourite seat at the island

we have ones that stack. So not very comfy but easy to move around and re use.

Would recommend if you don't need a soft seat !

We use ours a lot, but have a very big island (around 4.5m long) so lots of space to sit around it and not be near the hob end.

We have the Kartell Masters chairs. Surprisingly really comfortable, and so easy to keep clean. Highly recommend.

Snap! So much comfier than they look and most importantly with young kids, wipe clean.

Stacking ones were the cheap ones we initially bought from Ikea and replaced within weeks. They were great for stacking and the occasional perch, but like you say, very uncomfortable for any length of time and we found ourselves using the island more and more so replaced them.
