Monochrome tiles and grout

Hi.
So we’re having our bathroom floor retiled soon and we’re pretty happy (we think) with our choice of tile - a black (well very dark grey) and white porcelain tile which we’ll use to create a windmill effect like in the photo attached.

So ideally we don’t want to use white grout in our bathroom just for ease of cleaning etc. So we were thinking of a dark grey/black grout. The picture I’ve attached shows two samples with the left one having a solid black triangle and the right one (our preferred choice, Bert and May) which is more of a very dark grey. Ideally we want the pattern to be the main focus but obviously grout can make a massive difference with that. We went to B&Q today just to have a look and they do have grey grout, but there’s so many different options and you can’t just pick up a sample of them. All they’ve got is a small sticker of the colour which is hard to go off. We’re not sure if black grout would stand out and ruin the pattern with it not being a solid black triangle. So now we’re back to square one thinking would white just be easier! I guess we’re worried if we pick the wrong shade of grey it could look awful.

Anyone been in a similar situation or have any advice?

Are you getting Bert and May Alalpardo? Super envious if you are. I love the look but can't persuade my husband to go for cement (rather than porcelain) because of our little ones.

I think mid to dark grey for that. B&M do a design service for free and they will gladly advise you. Have a look at Baked Tiles as well - we bought off them, and their website actually gives suggested grout colour for each tile.

We have black and white monochrome Edwardian original tiles in the hallway, and our builder said the grout was grey. We also had black and white monochrome tiles put in the cloakroom toilet, and went for mid grey.

Please share a photo when done!

Mid grey grout here

Though confusingly the tiles also have grey and off white colouration around the edges, so what you're seeing here is probably that rather than the grout 🤦🏻‍♀️

The grout in this pic is BAL Micromax2 Grout in Graphite.
We got three colour samples (Topps Tiles, I think) which were small plastic sticks, around 8cm long, which were quite good for judging which colour.

We used a mid grey for the grout. I’ll take a picture in a bit.

(Graphite was the middle shade of three greys that we got sample of)

This is our crazy pattern with grey grout.

Can't upload a photo but we went for graphite grey grout, for practical reasons, and I'm very pleased with it.

Thank you for the advice! Also love them tiles in your cloakroom toilet. I’ll definitely have a look at Baked Tiles to see what they recommend for similar tiles….quite a handy feature that!

Yeah it is the Alalpardo tiles from B&M we’re thinking of getting in porcelain as opposed to encaustic. They’re on offer at the moment so not a million miles more expensive than other online stores. Mid-grey sounds like a good shout from what’s been advised so far - I’ll see if i can find some more info online. We can’t wait to have the floors done; people think our current flooring is nice but we’ve hated it since the moment we moved in!

Oh that’s brill! Didn’t realise Topps Tiles did samples, might have to pop down and have a look at what they’ve got. Also gorgeous bathroom tiles - massive tile envy!

Oh wow love them tiles - they totally transform any space! Thanks for the pic, it really helps to see the grout colour.

Thanks for that. Graphite grey seems to be another popular choice!

The left tile is definitely sharper but in person it feels a bit cold looking (don’t really know how to describe it). Also it feels like we can see the print lines on the black so not 100% on the quality. The right tile, whilst not having a deep black looks a bit more natural and seems better quality.
