Drawing plans - software for simple layout drawings for non technical people??

We are having a minor remodel downstairs to knock a wall down and put a back door in - alongside a new kitchen.

My builder has done some basic plans but not with the whole new space - just focussed on what was the old kitchen so they're not useful as I can't visualise the new space unless I see if all on a plan.

I've asked him to do this and he's suggested an architect - I know we probably need this eventually but right now I'm still playing with different ideas and don't want to waste architect money on loads of different options....??

Is there any user friendly software that's free or cheap for me to put basic dimensions in and start playing about with worktop lengths / door placements / tables / islands etc?? Not 3D just a 2D floor plan.

Or you can try using the ikea kitchen planner

Magicplan. And the diy kitchen planner is excellent.

I absolutely hate the ikea kitchen planner. Dreadful piece of kit.

I feel a bit Luddite saying this but I used paper pencil and an architect’s scale ruler.

I am sure there are more modern solutions!

Ooo @minipie I'm pretty sure my Dad had a scale ruler that might not be a bad shout actually. I'll see how long it takes me to throw the laptop across the room with the software....

I did this with graph paper, and also did a few sketches to picture how it would look.
