We are finally getting round to getting stairs and landing walls replasteted (1950's house) my DH says we can keep the old gross beige/biscuit carpet I hate ( It was here when we moved in 8 years ago) in an effort to keep costs down! How and where can I get a nice carpet that is affordable and acceptable for DH (and fitted last one he fitted --went really well- Wood on stairs not great so not an option to go no carpet!! Any suggestions please?

I think John Lewis own brand carpets are the best value. I would take advice from them about suitability for stairs but there are some heavy domestic ones that are well priced. I cannot see why they are not suitable for stairs. I agree that you don’t want an old carpet with new walls!

I have John Lewis own brand and it's great. The previous one we had (not JL) cost a fortune and was a light cream / off white colour - the current one is darker and a a alight tweedy look but doesn't look patterned. It was much cheaper than the previous one & the the JL carpet fitter said it was brilliant for stairs as hard wearing. When I went to the carpet dept. in JL the assistants were really very helpful & knowledgeable.

Or could you clean the hell out of the one you have and see how it looks when walls etc all smart ?

Ask for recommendations locally on Facebook or similar. We found a small independent carpet shop that way and it was so much cheaper than the usual places.

New walls new floor. OP I'm in a similar dilemma and I'm thinking if the boards under the carpet aren't great I'll paint and draught proof them for now.
I need this beige stair carpet gone. And in my lounge and bedroom.
I can't bear the sight of it.
