Insurance papers or anything for the builder?

Just about to sign the contract with the builder and pay a deposit. Been recommended by friends and also on Checkatrade. However, I know nothing about him otherwise.
Should I ask him for a copy of his insurance or anything? He seems to know what he's talking about but I am about to pay him ££ by way of deposit.

You'll need his insurance details to tell your building insurance company.

I have to tell my insurance co? That had never occurred to me.

@lebkuchenforxmas it's not immediately obvious and unfortunately some insurers are more understanding than others. If your builder doesn't have insurance walk away.

We were very glad we insisted on insurance evidence when our decorator flicked varnish all over the Amtico flooring that cost £4K+. He dithered about claiming on his insurance and said we should claim on ours! Luckily I work in the industry and threatened Court for damage. Never employ anyone without them having third party cover for damage to your property otherwise the cheaper quote with no protection for you could be false economy.
