Has anyone got the taller full height DIY kitchen units?

Looking at the Helmsley range for our new kitchen. Going around and around in circles over the configuration and colour!

Our kitchen ceiling is 2.7m tall. Our current tall units are standard 1970 height units. We wanted to get that height tall unit but put top boxes above, but as DIY are no longer doing any bespoke items and one of our tall cupboards will be 500 wide instead of 600, we can’t get a top box to fit.

So I am now thinking of just using the taller units which are 2300 with legs. This would be a run of broom cupboard, integrated freezer, integrated fridge, oven housing and then a corner larder unit. However I’m now worried they will be overbearing.

Has anyone got units this height with a similar height ceiling? If so, could you post a picture?

Just wanted to sympathize as i am going round and round in circles too! I have same height ceilings and think i have decided on 2.4m high units and then will sort cornice height later depending how it looks as it comes unpainted. Sorry no photos to show and I am not using DIY kitchens so not much help. Who knew choosing a kitchen could be so painful!

Thank you! I was feeling quite smug the first few times I made changes, thinking how great it was I had allowed myself time to digest the plan and alter it. Now I wish I had just ordered the bloody thing!

Are you using HKOC? I wanted to use them but their lead time is so long at the moment and I’ve been trying to get my head in gear for the last year to sort out the kitchen. Now that I’m finally on it I don’t want to wait til next summer. Having unlimited colour choice might also send me over the edge!!

Have you used their online planner? Quite helpful for visualising the space, once you get the hang of it.

Justcannotbearsed · 23/11/2021 08:17

We added a top box to ours, howdens, it still leaves a gap though. We put lights above and it looks ok.

SunnyUpNorth · 23/11/2021 09:18

Yes @HouseyHouse21 I’m constantly on the planner! It’s a great tool but it doesn’t fully show how it will look in your own space.

@Justcannotbearsed did you have standard height units and then a top box? I don’t mind having a gap at the top, or could box that in, I’m just wondering if floor to almost ceiling will be a bit too imposing. I do really like that look when I see it online but those houses always tend to be really big, airy bark conversions with plenty of space.

I had the extra tall units in our barn conversion that had really high ceilings and they looked great. Couldn't reach the top two shelves tho but I am short Grin

I've got similar ceilings and just had a second nature kitchen put in. I've got tall cupboards and then top boxes and coving then there is about 2/3 inches to the ceiling. We weren't supposed to have any gap as I had told the fitters I wanted it totally flush but it looks fine. I was worried about it looking imposing, especially as I've gone for a dark colour but it's fine. Only had it around a week but I'm so glad I went for the top boxes.

I looked at diy, ikea and hmkoc but ended up with second nature as we ended up using an installer who came recommended and thats what he tends to use. Apart from ikea which was cheaper they all came out around the same price.

SunnyUpNorth · 23/11/2021 10:49

@JonSnowedUnder any chance of a picture?! I’ve looked into so many different suppliers and fitters etc that I’m just going to stick with diy now as at least it’s one decision made! Would have gone with hkoc if their lead time was shorter. The second nature ones looked lovely too but I’m just going to stick with diy. Have used them before and happy with the quality - of the product at least, customer service can be challenging!

@bettertimesarecomingnow I’m tall but I’m still planning to get a little collapsible footstool to keep in my new broom cupboard for reaching the top shelves!

Here's mine - my ceiling is 3m so I went for the extra tall units.

Please don't get grey. DH picked the colour. It wasn't what I wanted. I hate it.

@sunnyupnorth I'll see if I can pm you a pic, probably unlikely but might get recognised!

SunnyUpNorth · 23/11/2021 13:38

@roses2 thanks, they don’t look too high at all. And we are getting a very similar grey! I can’t imagine letting my dh pick a colour, he literally has no interest whatsoever. The kitchen will be a complete surprise to him!!

Yes it doesn't feel high at all even though they actually are because the ceiling is so tall. I definitely recommend a small set of steps!

I love the style but the colour is just so bleugh.

ponkydonkey · 23/11/2021 15:54

Yes I did use taller wall units in our high Ceiling Victorian kitchen
It's great so much more storage!

They were the ikea ones

ponkydonkey · 23/11/2021 15:55

And they don't look over bearing at all...

Also added larder units up to the celling

ponkydonkey · 23/11/2021 15:56

It also stops all that greasy dusty ugh on top of the wall units

beggingforsleep · 23/11/2021 16:28

We're midway through fitting our HKOC kitchen with units to the ceiling on one side but it's not full length of wall. Ceiling height is 2.75. I would wait if you can, our builders have been really impressed with the quality of the units (esp for the price!). The far right has a top box too but can't put it up till the worktop is in.

Ooh it’s lovely @beggingforsleep have you been painting them as you go?

We could wait, there’s no particular reason we have to get it done then it’s just that I’ve been faffing around with trying to get started with it for a year after trying to convince dh for ten years that we need to replace it! So now that I’ve started the ball rolling I’m impatient to get going. I’m happy with the diy one I just find their customer service trying!!

Our build starts in January - I'm going with the 2300 height cupboards with top boxes on top, as well as on top of the wall cabinets. Here's a mock up I got Wren to do for me.

beggingforsleep · 24/11/2021 18:33

@SunnyUpNorth no, i paid someone to do the painting. We've painted the whole house in the last year and still have some to do and just couldn't face the cabinets too!
