Breakfast cupboard from HMKC / Davey & Alger

Has anyone ordered a breakfast cupboard from HMKC/Davey & Alger above 1200 wide? They make one bigger than 1200 with bifold doors for appliances but dont appear to have units to go under it that align. I wanted it to look like a freestanding cupboard so the units below the worktop aligned with the top as photo. Just wondered what anyone else had done who used HMKC. Thanks

I wanted to do similar, but ended up changing the design.

I've got a 50cm closed cupboard, 100cm open shelving, then 50cm closed cupboard. All units open to a 2m run of worktop underneath.

I've got 2 sets of the bi-folds on the back of my island, as that's 2.7m.

Being fitted next week!!

breakfastcupboard · 14/11/2021 09:39

Thank you. Did you change because they couldnt do the design? I saw pictures like this on their website so paid my £1k deposit and now so many of the things I was intending to have are not possible. It feels so disappointing and as the breakfast cupboard was a key feature I dont think I can go ahead unless there is a solution. Hoping someone will have found a way round it. Not sure why the cupboards are on their website gallery if not available.

anyone else used HMKC?

@breakfastcupboard that's so frustrating for you. I paid my deposit before thinking too much about design.

When are your delivery dates?

beggingforsleep · 14/11/2021 13:47

Lots of people on here use HMKC. Ours has just been installed and is being painted. It's really good quality. The builders keep looking at it, pulling draws out, talking about how it was built. They love it.

Hope that offers some reassurance despite them not being able to do the breakfast cupboard you want

beggingforsleep · 14/11/2021 13:49

Can you not get the symmetry you want by having two smaller cupboards below of exactly the same size? There would be a thicker join in the middle but you might not notice once it's in. If it's positioned apart from a run of other units

PoshWatchShitShoes · 14/11/2021 14:01

@breakfastcupboard have a look at DIY Kitchens too. There's a lovely account I follow on Insta and I'm sure she has a breakfast cupboard like the picture.

breakfastcupboard · 14/11/2021 14:35

I had a design done for DIY but they couldnt do a breakfast cupboard bigger than 1200 and i need it bigger for symmetry. The breakfast cupboard is the focal point of the kitchen so I dont want to compromise on it.

I cant understand how HMKC are showing these pictures on their website yet dont actually offer them. it is within a run of units and i think it would look awful with an extra frame/join in bottom cupboard and nothing like the pictures in their gallery/above. However if anyone has done this and it looks ok please can you post a picture. or any other solutions.

The picture shown is the freestanding look that I want.

I need to sign off design and have waited 6 months for this so am gutted.

Thank you.

If you can find what you want, it is definitely worth ordering at the moment. I've just seen that they have a really big sale on with some really good discounts on basic units. Sadly, I'm not in a position to purchase a new kitchen.

PoshWatchShitShoes · 14/11/2021 19:37

@breakfastcupboard maybe post your design here and someone will have a good idea of how to make it work.

I'm happy with my HKOC units, but I drove all the design myself. That's what missing from their service, as "designer" should really be renamed "drawer".

breakfastcupboard · 14/11/2021 20:26

Barnaby - when you pay the deposit the price is held - which I did 6 months ago - prices are the same now in their sale. I have paid £1k so would lose that if i dont finalize the order.

Poshwatch - i can easily redesign without the wider breakfast cupboard but without it i could have bought a much much cheaper kitchen. I went to HMKC to get this wider breakfast unit with bi folds so i dont want to change the design now. They are showing it on their gallery photos and on instagram which is why I booked so it is very disappointing that you cant actually get it.

I have a HKOC kitchen with a 1 metre breakfast cupboard. I did see the wider ones with the bifold doors in their showroom but I don’t remember the base.

How do you know that the breakfast cupboard on their website is wider than 1.2metres? A solution would be to get another supplier to make the base. We are having a dresser made by Pineland pineland.co.uk/services/ - they can make anything to your exact measurements.

breakfastcupboard · 14/11/2021 21:30

Thanks QC - The breakfast cupboard bi fold tops are pictured with a 1500 base unit (which doesnt come in smaller apparently) as above.

Can pineland copy width of door panels etc identically so when painted it looks the same. What wait do they have as I have already waited well over 6 months. Could HMKC not do the dresser for you?

I did get pineland to quote initially but their hand drawn sketches with hand written measurements in imperial put me off as there seemed room for error.

I''m not keen on doors that open at the height of the worktop, so they would sweep aside anything standing there.

cloudtree · 14/11/2021 22:03

I have a hmkc kitchen with a wide (1000) unit. I wanted drawers on the base so stacked a drawer base and a larder top. There are limitations with the designs but the brochure clearly state the max and min sizes for each type of cabinet.

Can’t you have two 600s

breakfastcupboard · 14/11/2021 22:58

pigletjohn - the idea of the appliance cupboard is that the toaster/toastie/mixer/microwave/bread maker/coffee maker are all in there hidden but plugged in ready to use and doors close to conceal all clutter. obviously toaster etc need pulling forward to use for safety. it would be next to full height fridge on one side and quooker tap on other for tea so nothing to sweep aside as picture above (or am I missing something).

Cloudtree - i know the brochure states the sizes but at the outset i just saw pictures as above on their website so believed that was what they sold. I dont understand why they are picturing it on website, gallery and instagram if they dont sell it. If i use a 1200 unit i dont have symmetry with window and might as well have got it much cheaper elsewhere. i specifically wanted symmetry so need wider. Is your breakfast cupboard 1000 - presumably not with bifolds ?

OP posts:
cloudtree · 15/11/2021 06:41

But they do that set up, just not with the measurements you want. The website picture didn’t have the measurements on it. They’re very flexible (one of my units was 974mm) but within their max and min tolerances which is fair enough.

If you are absolutely insistent on it then just get one made to fit and match in from elsewhere?

breakfastcupboard · 15/11/2021 07:31

cloudtree - the base in the picture above is only available in 1500 and the top is only in 1200-1400 yet they have pictured it on their adverts as both the same size so you would expect to be able to buy the top and bottom to match. They shouldnt advertise things you cant buy. Of course they will have max and min sizes for products but this is not what i am querying.

SollaSollew · 15/11/2021 11:18

Hi, I have a HMKOC (no breakfast cupboard though!). Looking at it do you think it's possible that the unit on top is 1400 wide and that it's off set by 5cm either side? It's hard to tell with the doors open but I think that might be what they might have done.

I might have missed it but for symmetry what size do you need it to be 1500 or 1400?

Qc16 · 15/11/2021 11:23

@breakfastcupboard

Thanks QC - The breakfast cupboard bi fold tops are pictured with a 1500 base unit (which doesnt come in smaller apparently) as above.

I decided to order from Pineland as I wanted a freestanding dresser in solid wood that we could take with us if we decided to move. I had been looking at buying a second hand one but getting the right one was problematic and not that much cheaper than a new custom made one from Pineland. We had 2 freestanding wardrobes from Pineland last year which we are very happy with. I didn’t consider HKOC as I know their waiting lists - Pineland were able to fit us in with a delivery in the week commencing 29th Nov. so they may be able to fit in a delivery to coincide with your delivery from HKOC. We are having it spray painted to match our Mylands paint but you would just want it in natural wood so that it can all be painted in the same paint. We sent them photos of our kitchen units and measurements so that it all matches. I have just been on the phone to Karen at Pineland to confirm and pay for our dresser and she said that they can work in metric measurements if you wish.
Qc16 · 15/11/2021 11:54

One piece of advice on the dresser top from HKOC - make sure you have enough depth for the microwave etc - we just ordered their normal size and our microwave didn’t fit! We had to buy a smaller microwave and still had to get our kitchen fitter to cut a hole in the back of the unit to accommodate it.
The other thing to consider is that HKOC have filler posts that could be added to the dresser top to make it fit the 1500 base.

cloudtree · 15/11/2021 13:02

I think that’s a 1300 dresser base with a 1300 bifold larder top.

breakfastcupboard · 15/11/2021 13:58

Solla - there are other pictures with the doors closed so they definitely have made bifolds with a base unit to match for some customers or they have pictured kitchens made by other companies on their website..

Qc - thanks for the tip - our microvawe is tiny (but we rarely use it) and i had planned the depth to allow for space all round. I will ask to see design with 1500 base and narrower bifolds.

Maye i should look at pineland instead. Has anyone had a kitchen from them??

cloud - 1300 would be perfect but they are saying they cant do 1300 base with 1300 bifolds!

Qc16 · 15/11/2021 14:29

As you’ve already paid your deposit to HKOC why not get the rest of your kitchen made by them and then just this whole unit made by Pineland - I think you said it’s next to a fridge one side and a quooker tap the other so even if it looked slightly different in some way, once it’s painted you won’t see it.
I suggest you get it totally freestanding so that you can take it with you if you move.
And you really don’t want a cheaper kitchen - once you have a quality kitchen fitted you wouldn’t want to settle for anything else.

PoshWatchShitShoes · 15/11/2021 14:39

@breakfastcupboard have you spoken to Penny or Sally? They're both lovely. Can you explain that you were expecting a different design?
