Help! How do I switch off the water supply please?

Calling @PigletJohn or anyone else who can help me.

I have a leak in my washing machine inlet hose. I have switched off the stopcock inside my property but the leak is still going strong.

The main stopcock is in the street. It's locked with something with an X shape on it. I tried a screwdriver but it doesn't work.

I really would prefer not to call out an emergency plumber.

Any advice please I'm desperate.

Update: new hose fitted and washing done.

Thanks to you I didn't panic and call out an emergency plumber. Sorry if I was ratty, I'm not at my best when there's water streaming out of a burst pipe.

I now know how to install a washing machine hose.

Thanks, especially to PigletJohn.
Thank you MNers

Hooray! Well done Smile

Thanks. Changing the hose was easy.
It was so good to have someone to ask.
An emergency plumber would have been expensive.

Well done - emergency plumbers cost ££££’s.

It’s worth learning the basics and where things are in your house ie can you turn off a valve for each tap etc with a screwdriver? Each pipe should have something like what you turned for the washing machine. So if you look at the pipes under your sink with a torch is there one of these (or similar)

Do you know where you fuse box is and what to do if one of the fuses trips (ie your lights go off)

If you are smart you will now find out how to switch the water off to the rest of your house properly.

Otherwise if a leak occurs again you may not be able to turn it off.
