Removal and packing quotes are insane

For a 4 bed house move to a new home 15 minutes away, we have been quoted from £2,500 to £4,500 from 3 different removal companies.

This is double what it used to be a year ago. Are you all seeing these kind of pricing??

Increased fuel cost, brexit hurting staff numbers, huge demand… yep seeing it everywhere.

ImaBraveNhsHero · 01/10/2021 10:43

Yes, they're all charging much more now. They're in demand so can get away with it.

ImaBraveNhsHero · 01/10/2021 10:45

And yeah it's totally a rip off.

TeapotCollection · 01/10/2021 10:49

😮 FIFTEEN minutes away? Did you type that correctly OP? 😮 if so we’d be hiring a van and doing it ourselves

OnTheBenchOfDoom · 01/10/2021 10:53

The alternative is available, hire a van and pack and move yourselves. Personally having done several house moves there is no way I would want to be lifting sofas, wardrobes, chest of drawers, all the crockery and kitchen stuff, tables and chairs out of a house. We did it twice when we had smaller houses. Never again.
PeonyTime · 01/10/2021 11:04

Given I live in a cheep area, and a 4 bed house usually over 200k, you are looking at under 2% of your house move.
Just wince and pay it. Or maybe drop the packing part. There is no way I'd be moving a 4 bed house in a van - you would need several trips, and so want access to both houses at the same time.
The packing guys are amazing, and work like crazy. Hopefully this means their salaries are increasing.

ZealAndArdour · 01/10/2021 11:09

Ermmm nope.

I just got two quotes to move from a first floor (no lift) two bed (very, very full) flat into a 4 bed semi ten minutes down the road and they came back at £350 and £460 for eight hours work. Charged at £30 for every 30 minutes it goes over the allotted 8 hours.

I live in the East Midlands, so probably much, much cheaper than down south.

Assume that was a man with a van and no packing included.
ShaunaTheSheep · 01/10/2021 11:28

Yes, prices are crazy - paid double what I expected and couldn't even book container storage due to demand, so everything is in a storage unit (we broke the chain to keep our buyer).

One of the quotes was in excess of £10k Shock. We could have bought new furniture instead!

ZealAndArdour · 01/10/2021 11:36

Nope, proper removal forms, insured and with associated storage complexes available if problems with getting keys, etc. The vehicle is 3.5 tonne low loader.

ZealAndArdour · 01/10/2021 11:37

Also, the OP didn’t ask about packing. I am packing myself, but don’t ultimately want to have to move a single thing myself on the day.

Viviennemary · 01/10/2021 11:41

Do your own packing. They will send you crates. That will be a lot cheaper. But its a pain and takes ages.

sar302 · 01/10/2021 11:48

Will they do a quarter pack?

When we moved, ours came and did the kitchen, breakables and dismantled and remade furniture.

Kept the costs down a bit, but did all the really fiddly stuff

maofteens · 01/10/2021 12:49

That is a lot. I've just moved 70 miles (which included a ferry) and it was £3000 to pack a 2500sqft house, store for a month, move it the 70 miles and collect a piano along the way, plus collect from a storage unit and deliver those contents to another storage unit.
However if you've had several quotes then demand is having the effect of pushing up prices. Petrol/diesel situation isn't helping.

The title of thread is literally "Moving and Packing quotes are insane"! Grin

We paid £1600 this week to pack up a 3 bedroom hous and move 15 mins away to a 4 bedroom house. They dismantled and remade the beds and uninstalled and reinstalled the dishwasher and washing machine. Two guys came and packed the day before for us, and on the day there was 3 people with 3 vans. The whole day was made so much easier by the team, worth every penny

FurierTransform · 01/10/2021 17:16

Double the cost it would have been 1 year ago is crazy. Have you got some other quotes?

Gyptian · 01/10/2021 19:39

We paid £1k recently to move from a 3 bed to another 3 bed 10 minutes away. No packing or dismantling apart from a wardrobe unit.
